I think he was a pedophile

Why would a man have any interest in spending time with a child that is not his. When hes talking to his girlfriend on the phone and pretending he getting off and lying even about being naked. Its like he's just trying to give the impression hes a normal guy when, really he isn't. Right after he talks to the girl about hooking up, then she is sucking on that candy and in close up. That is to let the audience know she gave him oral sex. What is sick is that he was having sex with his girlfriend in one part of the house, and having sex with the little girl he took in another. And both of them are unaware of the other.

*facepalm.

Because believe it or not, there are people out there, often called "teachers", "coaches", and mentors, who really do care about kids and don't want to fark them. They want to help kids in trouble. That's what Gary was trying to do but failed miserably.

Uhmm, because he actually was getting off?, ever hear of phone sex? The book was a bit more explicit with this section.

Right after he talks to the girl about hooking up, then she is sucking on that candy and in close up.

No, the sucker meant nothing. In the movie version, David DID NOT molest her. If he had, if would have blown what trust she had in him. Oona talked about it in the commentary.

The bath scene was way more jaw dropping in the book than in the movie. However, it was never about sex, it was about the power he had over her, that was made quite clear in the book. David in the book was a high toned son of a bitch.

What is sick is that he was having sex with his girlfriend in one part of the house, and having sex with the little girl he took in another. And both of them are unaware of the other.

You really missed the whole point of this movie. Tommie's reaction after the sex scene was proof positive that he never molested her. David used the sex scene essentially to break Tommie's heart, it was to show her that life was not perfect and yes, bad things happen. Tommie had a massive crush on David. David missed this, and it really screwed things up. Tommie was angry because she knew she was a child in his eyes, because of the crush, she wasn't thinking.

As far being unaware of each other, 90% of David's actions was to keep himself out of jail. He essentially kidnapped a child.

"That is to let the audience know she gave him oral sex." Did you write, direct, or produce this movie? If not, this is merely your opinion. It's sad that you couldn't see past it.

I've spent most of my adult life teaching and advising college students. I've been very fond of many of them, but not sexually attracted. I see my male students as boys, not men, and I'm not attracted to boys. My caring about these kids does not make me a pedophile.

Based on his behaviour, I do think he was attracted to her. I don't think he had sex with her though.
