He was a serial killer

The missing brother, the way he seduced and took her, the post he said would be hers?
Somehow he decided to quit murdering and used her to stop.
He would have otherwise buried her under there!

One of those posts was his missing brother's and he's buried under it.

I don't know if you're trolling, but somehow, I think you missed something...

Repeat that aloud while looking in the mirror.

There were subtle clues all along the way.
He literally did countless acts kidnapping serial killers are known for except kill her.
Gained her trust, got her to go willingly?

You're naive.

I read the book and have seen the movie twice so far.

Gary's relationship with Tommie was really about power, control and manipulation, even more so in the book. Gary, especially in the book, was a borderline psychopath, BUT, the tenets of the relationship remained the same in both the book and movie. Based on the movie version, Gary had at least SOME feelings for Tommie, and enough self awareness to realize that he screwed up in the end, and made it worse for her. Plus he missed a massive crush on Tommie's part. The book version, while Gary was a real ahole, still would not have killed her.

Gary's brother disappeared when he was Tommie's age. The brother was sleeping behind a gas station, nowhere near the location of the cabin.

Also the post thing was partly metaphorical, it was the final act in giving the cabin to her, remember he left a note on top of the post.

I don't mind reading and discussing differing opinions put forward by anybody. What I have trouble with is people who make proclamations as fact, which are nothing more than opinion. Even more so when it's done rudely.

Could you elaborate?

Pure speculation!

Lol wow
Someone has watched too many $hitty horror films.
No. This is just a small, smartly acted and written dramatic film that can be taken at face value.
There isn't a hidden plot or twist ending.

reply

The dramatic tension is built from the viewer's preconceived feelings and knowledge of violent sexual pedophiliacs. It could have seriously gotten real morally dark there, but didn't.

I don't think he was. He was a manipulative person, probably narcissistic with sociopathic tendencies. But I don't think he was violent or physically abusive. I think he was emotionally attached to Tommie, and wanted to help her in some way, but his personal issues prevented him from doing so the right way.
