Do you need to watch the TV movies before I start watching the show on Netflix

Venus, no you don't. I started watching the show yesterday and I'm hooked. I already binge watched Season 1 and I'm on to Season 2, and I am not lost. They've written this show as a series and you don't have to watch the movies to get it. I got it.

People who have watched the movies tend to be bitter about some things that are different or have changed from the movie, and they complain a lot. I have nothing to complain about because I have not seen the movie, and yet I find it a beautiful, clear and enjoyable series. It reminds me of Cedar Cove or When Calls the Heart. When Calls the Heart I think comes from movies, which I have not seen, and yet the series is beautiful. And all are Hallmark shows.

So, no offense to the poster about who told you you have to watch the movies, but that's not true. If you want a backdrop, do like I did and just go on IMDB and read the summaries/synopsis of the movies if you want more info, which helped and was interesting enough, but you don't need to watch the movies to understand or like this lovely series. Hope this helps.

Not watching the movies is like starting a show in the middle of the series without watching the first and second seasons. Sure you can jump right into it, but you miss out on the back story.

Watching the movies will introduce you to central characters like Cassie, Lori, Brandon, Grace, George, and Abigail. And others like the mayor, etc.

I understand what you say dpratt, and in some cases that is really so. Like Star Wars, Terminator and certain shows that have sequels, you really need to see the earlier shows. But I find that this series the Good Witch is so different. I did not watch the movies but I knew they existed. I decided to watch the series on Netflix without watching the movies first, and I did not feel like I missed a thing. You would feel so and think of things you missed, because you have seen them before in the movies.

That's why I told Venus that she can watch without having seen the movies first. My sister saw the movies, and when I told her about the series she was interested. But when I mentioned to her that it started off with Jake having died, she was so upset! She said she was not going to watch the series because of that. I had read about his death on the IMDB site and when I watched the first episode, but because I had not seen him nor "bonded" with the character, it was easy for me to start the series without all that back story. I jumped right in and fell in love with all the characters without missing a beat. (Abigail drives me nuts though). I really don't think you have to see the movies first. In fact some might not want to see the series based on what they know of the movies, but watching the series on its own is good and uncomplicated.

I watched the entirety of season 1 on Netflix before I saw the films but that's because I didn't realise the films existed. It was only after someone told me about them on social media that I found them online. I didn't feel like I missed anything but now having seen both, there are some questions about missing characters that come to mind i.e. George's wife Gwen, and I don't know if the timeline between the films and show has jumped ahead somewhat. However whilst there are some references to the earlier films I don't believe it's necessary to watch them in order to enjoy the show.

Not really, sure, there are references to the past TV movies of Good Witch, but you will have no trouble understanding what is going on even if you haven't seen previous instalments, cause mainly this is a separate story whatsoever.

P.S. If you have seen one Good Witch movie, you've seen them all. At least in my opinion.

reply

No. I am up to Season 4 watching the series, and I'm enjoying it very much without ever having seen any of the previous movies. When I'm done with the series, I do intend to seek out all of the movies and watch them in order.
