Yeah, from a design perspective there would be no way to do that without the darker characters blending in with the background.
It's called a stylistic choice to have heavy contrast and neon lights. The inverse of their current style would look hideous.

This show has a lot of problems so there really isn't any need to fabricate more from your desire that every show be politically correct. In fact, the last thing any comedy show should worry about is being politically correct.
