Bel Powley joins Elle Fanning in 'A Storm in the Stars'
‘Diary of a Teenage Girl’ Star Joins Elle Fanning in New Movie
Bel Powley, star of “Diary of a Teenage Girl,” will join Elle Fanning in period romance “A Storm in the Stars,” to be directed by Haifaa Al-Mansour.
Amy Baer will produce the film for Gidden Media. Joannie Burstein and Rebecca Miller are executive producing.
Emma Jensen’s screenplay centers on the love affair between the charismatic poet Percy Shelley and the brilliant 18-year-old Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin. That tumultuous relationship ultimately inspired her to write “Frankenstein.”
Powley will portray Claire Clairmont, Mary’s stepsister who has a hunger for attention and complicates Mary and Percy’s relationship when she moves in with them.
“Bel is fearless and immensely talented,” Baer said. “She immediately understood Claire – a complicated young woman who struggled in the shadow of her stepsister.”
Sony Pictures Classics picked up North American rights to “Diary of a Teenage Girl” at Sundance for $2 million. The movie, written and directed by Marielle Heller, also stars Kristen Wiig and Alexander Skarsgard in an adaptation of Phoebe Gloeckner’s coming-of-age novel centers on a troubled teenager who loses her virginity to her mother’s boyfriend.
The drama won the Grand Prix of Generation 14plus section at the Berlin Film Festival for best feature length film.
Powley stars as Princess Margaret in the upcoming “A Royal Night Out” opposite Sarah Gadon, Jack Reynor, Rupert Everett and Emily Watson. She recently wrapped production on Drake Doremus’ upcoming science fiction romantic drama “Equals,” starring Nicholas Hoult, Kristen Stewart, Guy Pearce and Jacki Weaver.
Baer launched Gidden Media in 2012 and produced “Last Vegas,” which grossed $136 million worldwide.
