I was so confused at first...

Having Mary Wollstonecraft in the bio confused me because I was like "But... She didn't write Frankenstein, her daughter did." Then I did some research and found that Wollstonecraft was part of Mary Shelley's name before she got married. Darn those 19th folks and naming their children after them. It makes everything so much more confusing!

Her mother (Wollstonecraft) was a feminist who felt women taking their husband's name "perpetuated the patriarchal oppression of women". Godwin agreed and raised Mary with her mother's name - teaching her to write her name by tracing her fingers on her mother's grave stone.
