Groot is dead, baby groot is his son

RIP groot and so much for being a clone.

reply

It doesn't really work that way with plants.

Baby Groot is a "shoot off the old root".

reply

Who is James Gunn, and why is he being scientifically inaccurate?

Because Baby Groot isn't a son, he's not the result of mingling with anyone else's DNA, and he's not even really a clone. He's the same person who just grew back; if a starfish loses an arm and the arm grows back it's the same starfish, and if a Groot loses 99% of its body and the body grows back, it's still the same Groot and not a clone of one.

Why are you applying real world science to an alien that doesn't exist?

reply

Who is James Gunn, and why does he think he can ignore real-world science?

reply

James Gunn is the guy who makes the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. As to ignoring science, these movies are not remotely realistic so asking for realism makes no sense.

reply

Ignoring science or not makes the difference between science fiction or fantasy. In good science fiction, the basic laws of physics and genetics are assumed to apply unless the writer comes up with a clever reason they do not, while in fantasy you can use magic and Dumbledore can turn a rock into ten Groots.

I admit comic books veer uncomfortably between sci-fi and fantasy, but even Fantasy writers should avoid annoying the science-aware members of the audience more than necessary.

reply

This is a comedy first and foremost.

reply

I'm really not trying to be deliberately contrarian, but I would say this film is first and foremost an adventure.

And adventure stories need a certain amount of... not reality, but believability to work. The viewer needs to know that the laws of physics apply unless stated otherwise, or there's no sense of danger or suspense. Unless we understand that forces and molecules behave in ways we understand, an assault from an enemy is no more threatening than a bop from one of the Three Stooges.

reply

The film is in the comedy genre, which was why they had a comedy film director/writer to make the movies and their lead actor was a guy from a sitcom. The whole thing was supposed to be absurd and weird. Reality does not factor in to anything.

reply

Sorta like Cell from Dragon Ball. Yeah I get what you mean, he regenerated after supposed death. But since James is the dude that directs the movies, his word is final on what goes on in them movie wise.
