The ending - question. !!!!!Spoiler alert!!!!

A slow-moving movie however it kept me interested.

But the ending... huh?????

Spoiler, spoiler. spoiler, spoiler, spoiler, spoiler.....

Did the bearded brother figure he would shoot the family out of the crime business?? Who was the goat herder on the beach... was that Pe?

Of course he wanted his family out of the crime business. It had made his life hell.

The young man at the end was the young man who informed on the son of the bearded brother

I know you've got to take a movie as it is, but what did he think he was going to achieve - mass familial suicide? He puts the rest of his family, and their henchmen and their families, in danger from the other family and the Columbians whom they owe a bunch of money to, and at the end of the day the trade continues with someone else getting rich off it. Wouldn't he have accomplished more by going to the police or leaving the country or just killing himself?
Another issue - do you think it was strange that his brothers, etc. would have held him back when he tried to attack his son for challenging him? Or was that a sign of how little they respected him by then?
Interested in anyone else's thoughts.

I interpreted it slightly differently. I think Luciano not only kills his brother, but, himself too. There's his wife pleading with him to drop the gun and he has a wry smile. He burns the photo of his father. In his mind, the only way for this to "end" was for all the males in the family to die. So, all 3 brothers and seemingly the only male heir would be gone.

I concur with your interpretation. The crime syndicate within Luciano's family had caused hatred and disgust within himself. After all that happened, it is not surprising Luciano decided to "cleanse" the family. It was such a powerful ending, reflecting the repercussions of leading a violent lifestyle.

I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not.

I took it as he blamed his younger brother, who was clearly the capo, for luring his son to the allure of the life of crime. Ovviamente Luciano eschewed the family business and didn't want his son involved.
