rock and roll is pretty much dead

Dave Grohls new show on HBO just proves rock and roll is pretty much dead as they are only interviewing a bunch of old rock geezers going on about the glory days as if anyone under the age of 35 gives a *beep* seriously is there nothing new and exciting in the world of rock? what a shame oh well guess we just live of the glory days of the past. barf.

Sounds like a statement made by someone who is very much under 35 yrs. old, that simply doesn't get it. There's a much bigger picture that ties in with all of these episodes, all of these musicians interviewed, all of the bands that are talked about.

But, by your statement, it's obvious that you just don't see it. But, I hope that you at some point. I hope you figure it out, man. Really.

The whole point of this series/album is to pay tribute some of the most important music cities in the country. In order to effectively portray this, the musical history of each city must be explained. "History" being the operative word. How do you not see this?

reply

I get that but it just seems like now a days all they (music industry) ever do is pay tribute to "musical history" instead of making "musical history" they just want to go over and over the old stuff. like seriously why don't we travel around the country exploring new bands and musicians, no in the world of rock now you have to constantly kiss a bunch of old rockin geezers ass thats what I like about hip hop for instance nobody gives a *beep* about old timers like the kool moe dee or krs one, yes they will pay respect when respect is due but atleast in the world of hip hop they are constantly moving forward and trying to stay current, all rock seems to be interested is staying in the past.

btw that might be the only thing i like about the hip hop scene honestly hate hip hop music for what its worth.

You have to understand that the Foo Fighters are comprised of the older musicians. And that their influences are going to be twice as old. You also have to understand that they are focusing most on the cities histories that align more with their influences.
I believe that is the reason why they focused on the punk scene in Washington DC as opposed to the punk scene in Los Angeles.
If you're looking for some awesome new rock music check out some bands like Vacation, Bass Drum of Death, Crusades, Jeff the Brotherhood, Tweens, CPA, or 30 Miles.

that's the beauty of it - you can choose to consider the genre dead, while others see it as alive and well - and the world keeps on spinning.

If you think rock is dead, you just don't know where to look. Rock is alive and well in the world.

Exactly. The thing about great music is that it's rarely appreciated by a mainstream audience at the time. Most of the punk bands that are now considered legendary played in small clubs at the time and weren't discovered by mainstream audiences until decades later. Bands like The Ramones and The Sex Pistols played in front of small audiences in tiny clubs. The bands that did "make it" like Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd played small shows for many years before they become big. This is documented quite well on Sonic Highways - only a small group of people were going to see Kyuss in the desert, or going to see punk bands at CBGBs. It was a small subculture that was unknown to most people.

The point I'm trying to get to is that it's the same today. I'm 100% certain that there are *beep* awesome bands currently playing small clubs - bands that almost nobody has heard of right now, but will be considered legendary in 30 years.

I am, I assume, older than the op, I grew up on classic rock on the radio, and have discovered bands that did they airplay as yers have passed.....I love rock and roll, and I do t think I agree that it is dead, but I get what the OP IS SAYING, and I too am getting sick of all TE backslapping and rehashing of history. IMHO, th RRHOF is a joke, rock and roll has nothing to do with longevity, or any if the things that are prizes by Jann Wenner and his cronies (and I read Tollibg stone faithfully). I'm a huge Bruce fan, but I agree that the HOF shows, whose audience had nothing to do with "the kids", re, as John Lydin says, jut an excuse for Bruce to jam with his buddies. And I watch Sonic Highwas, but there are many points where I am beyond annoyed. This has all been done before, and done better. Might have something to do with not being a big Foo fan. Growl is a great drummer, but I wish he'd STFU sometimes, and seeing him wiring notes with glasses on makes me want to take ym of his face an step on them. And do t get me started on Taylor Hawkins. I seem I have gotten off track lol....Rock and roll wasn't supposed to ALWAYS be a celebration of the past. The music isn't really supposed to be "good", as Tom Prtty said, but it's supposed to be ALIVE, and this nevereing victory lap has nothing to do with that. And while I agree with the posters who said it's not dead, those acts that are out there doing it and getting some exposure for it, Nlack Keys, Jack white, Kings of Leon, are the exception. This is not rocks finest moment.

I think Dave Ghrol killed it too. Oooo! New conspiracy! ;)

When one of the biggest stars in the world is Miley Cyrus, you're right, but then you should be pissed that most of the mainstream music in the last 15 years has objectively sucked. However, there are also a lot of people under 35 who obviously love and appreciate older music, regardless when it was written. Not one person currently alive on this planet existed when most of the greatest classical compositions were written.
