You have no idea....
Even if you love and own Kon Ichikawa's 1959 adaption of the same film (like I do), you will NOT be ready for the horrors this movie has in store (like I wasn't). Not only is it the most graphic film in Tsukamoto's career, it's probably the most violently graphic war film ever made. However, It's also incredibly powerful and beautifully filmed. The cinematography is outstanding. Seeing the trademark Tsukamoto style of camera work in a natural environment is so awesome. The score by Chu Ishikawa is superb and has some shades of Tetsuo. Shinya's performance is also not to be overlooked either. In fact, it's his best performance in quite sometime. This movie has been something he has wanted to do for many years (The film is not a remake of Ichikawa's). He said at the screening that he read the book as a teenager and it left him shook and changed his views on war. He wanted to recreate that experience for the viewer, and Jesus Christ did he ever.
Be warned though, this movie is not for the weak stomached. It's a dark ride into the depths of hell that shows the true horrors of war. Seriously, it makes the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan look tame. (the flood lights...holy *beep*).
Apparently it's not being released until August 2015 to coincide with the anniversary of the end of WW2 but I hope it gets released in North America on DVD eventually (we never got a DVD of Kotoko, which is absolutely incredible as well).
I know it won't be for a while, but I can't wait to see what Shinya Tsukamoto does next.
