Are Fruit Smoothies Unhealthy?

In the later part of this documentary, it mentioned that a Jamba Juice smoothie had almost 140 grams of sugar.

Is there a difference in the sugar in fruit vs. the refined sugar that's added to processed foods? And any difference in how they affect the body?

I usually make a raw fruit smoothie every day, for example one smoothie might contain:

-1 whole banana
-5 strawberries
-1/4 mangoe
-1/8 pineapple
-Organic whole milk Yogurt

Is that too much sugar in one serving?

The problem, as mentioned in the movie, is it's hard to eat a ton of fruit. So even though fruit has a lot of sugar it also has a lot of other stuff that makes us feel full. When you blend it all up it feels like less so you can eat more.

I'd say as long as you're eating your smoothie, realize the amount of calories, and not adding sugar you're probably fine.

As was mentioned all the juicer does is remove all the sugar as the juice and dumps the fibre. So in fact it's healthier to eat the fruit than drink a smoothie because the fibre makes you feel full so you can only eat so much.

Yeah that part was a bit confusing, the entire movie they were putting emphasis on "refined sugar" and then suddenly whoops the sugar in strawberries kills you, too, sorry.

I threw my juicer away a long time ago, just for that reason. It just leaves the sugar laden juice.

As for smoothies different story as you are blending all the fruit into a drink.

My smoothie favorite is greek yogurt a banana and some berries all things I could easily eat in a sitting. Most of us could eat a cup of yogurt, cup of berries and a banana.

Where as to get the same amount of volume in a glass from a juicer would take way more fruit most likely more than you would want to eat or could eat in at once.

Jamba Juice use "fruit juice" in it's smoothies as well.
