Mike will make this but not Plinkett?

We already like his friends in Half in the Bag/Best of the Worst and have warmed up to the entire crew as a whole so I now wonder why Mike won't do these anyMORE even though the other RLM series are established now. Did he work on Space Cop over doing Plinkett>

I would pay 25 dollars for a 3 film Plinkett review BLU Ray for 25 bucks all day every day. Even some Half in the Bags of movies from like the 90's.

I like Jay/Rich and the rest of the gang in their respective strengths but a Plinkett review was suppose to be the treat around New Years each year. What happened?

Maybe he doesn't do Plinkett anymore because there are no other movies he really feels passionate enough about to keep making those types of really extensive, in-depth reviews.

"Maybe he doesn't do Plinkett anymore because there are no other movies he really feels passionate enough about to keep making those types of really extensive, in-depth reviews."

* I think the lack of passion is one reason. When Mike did the Titanic Plinkett review, it wasn't about making fun of parts of a movie. Mike didn't feel intensely about Titanic.
He talked about movie formulas and how Cameron (and others) use them. It was often like a film class.

* But another reason imo why Plinkett reviews are not the focus of RLM is that Half in the Bag shows are easier to make and so bring in more money through the year.
Take Man of Steel. Mike, Jay and Rich were very pissed off about that and two HITB episodes done in a few days took care of it.
The speed of HITB allows RLM to go on to the next review.
Those two episodes got 692,000 views on YouTube.
- Less effort and lots of views for advertising dollars.

Plinkett reviews take months to make increasing costs. But it is just one YouTube review.
The Plinkett review of The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull got one million views YouTube views.
All that work and it was almost matched (~2/3 the views) by a couple of Half in the Bag episodes.

* But Space Cop is a different thing. It's a feature film and not just another YouTube episode.

BB ;-)

it is just in my opinion - imo - 🌈

i cant speak for him, but if i were him id get sick of people demanding him do something, every time RLM posts anything. every video. every comment section.

also id imagine youtubes increasing crackdown on copyright issues would make plinkett-style reviews of anything else basically impossible.

lucasfilm was historically extremely lenient with others fair use of their content, which allowed the plinkett review to exist at all, with hundreds of tiny clips of the film in the various reviews.

nowdays if you post that stuff on youtube, for, say, a Marvel movie, you might get copyright Content ID complaints, three strikes, and then your account would be shut down.

Notice in Half in the Bag, they now only put tiny clips of the trailer in the show, and its bordered by the fake VHS tape with the rotating wheel. I'd guess thats to avoid ContentID claims. (Yes, people do get hit with Content ID complaints for reposting trailers)

reply

They only put the trailer in HITB episodes......because for the most part they're viewing movies that are only playing in theaters. Where would they get additional clips from lol? They don't get screener copies.

Thy have used clips of movies that are old, like when they reviewed Battlefield Earth or BOTW. What's more is there are still a million people on YouTube reviewing movies who use clips extensively.

reply

some of the big corporations like sony are getting insane. it doesnt matter if you only use a trailer, or clips of a movie that are out and they own, these corporations report you (since you are making money from their content, without their permission of giving them money)

youtube will shut you down so quick, and getting your account back can take months. and these corporations have tonnes of money to keep you shut down. especially if your review was negative. they use it as a bullying technique

reply

Maybe, but there are obviously still many movie "reviewers" on Youtube. It's become an industry at this point.

case in point... one of the biggest reviewers is Nostalgia Critic whose real name is Doug. He recently posted several videos talking about how copyright claims against his videos had meant that his channel was not making any revenue from his reviews. Clearly his reviews are all Fair Use but it didn't matter... youtube's system has essentially broken down where claimants have extraordinary power, and youtube does not hire enough people to deal with counterclaims.

Doug is not some random guy, he is one of the biggest review series on all of youtube, and has relationships with several other big youtubes (for example, Nostalgia Chick aka Lindsey Ellis who now does her own reviews on Patreon and posts alot of stuff to the Vimeo website).

Doug's crew has millions on millions of views. Things have really changed in the years since the Plinkett reviews went up. Circa 2016 it has become a bit of a mess.

Yeah, it must be miserable having a bunch of fans who want to see more of what made them like you in the first place...

Mike hit his high with the Star Wars reviews. The Star Trek ones were also cool, but surely didn't have nearly as much work put into them. I also really liked the Indiana Jones 4 review but when the Titanic video came out I felt that something was missing for the first time. That movie just wasn't really suited for that kind of review I felt. Same with Avatar. I'm not saying that those reviews were bad but the Prequel reviews were litarally masterpieces. I've never again seen such an outstanding blend of humor and informative movie discussion. I must've seen the reviews maybe about ten times now and I still admire their quality.

I always thought that Mike just ran out of steam a little afterwards. RLM became big through the attention he got from everywhere, maybe even a little too big. Perhaps he even started to produce another review about the Matrix Sequels or something similar but felt that he didn't have enough motivation anymore for putting all the work into the project. Also people were demanding more reviews all the time which probably also killed some of the fun.

On the other hand you could say that with all the money RLM gets monthly for doing random stuff, one could expect at least one yearly review. That would make many people very happy. I've never really been a big fan of Half in the Bag because Mike and Jay almost always have a very similar opinion about the movies they are talking about which is a little uninteresting for a discussion. Best of the Worst is much better in my opinion and a unique format I haven't seen before. I discovered some great movies through that series and still have loads of fun watching each new episode. I think they had only one recently that I found pretty bad in terms of movie choices (Wheel of the Worst had a couple more and overall much less replay value), but all the others were so funny and entertaining.

So in the end I think Mike decided to move on. I guess you can't force yourself producing reviews of the same quality that the Prequel ones had and maybe you just give on trying then.

I think you could argue that the Star Wars prequels were really almost uniquely suited to the Plinkett style of review. Those movies were a kind of perfect storm of ruined potential; you had well known actors, award-winners who are capable of giving truly excellent performances, with an essentially unlimited budget, the best special effects business in the world standing ready to work for you as their number one priority, the original creator of the work having a position of absolute creative control over every single aspect of the work, all working in one of the most revered movie franchises EVER, guaranteeing a ready-made audience that will hand you enormous financial success no matter what you do.

Those movies really should have been amongst the greatest in the history of science fiction. And yet, those same movies demonstrate creative failings of the most basic sort on every single level. Horrible writing, horrible plotting, horrible characters very poorly acted, horrible pacing... they're just a horrific mess.

It's an INCREDIBLY rich treasure for Plinkett particularly, given his brand of comic takedown combined with intelligent, incisive analysis. And let's be honest, it gives a great deal of scope for schadenfreude, which it fun.

There really aren't too many movies that you can plunder to that extent. Look at his Avatar and Titanic reviews. Both have their flaws, but neither one is anything like the car crash that the Prequels are. They've both extremely well made movies, competent in pretty much every respect. The only real criticisms to be made are that they're both pretty cynical exercises in emotional manipulation of the audience to put the viewed where the director wants them. That's a fair enough criticism to make, but it's hardly a train-wreck and you can't really laugh at how awful they are on that basis.

Or his Cop Dog review. Yeah, there's a lot to laugh at with Cop Dog, but jesus, who would ever expect a movie like that to be anything BUT awful schlock?

He's on a better footing with the likes of Crystal Skull, and it would be fun to see him do a review of Battlefield Earth, say. But there aren't too many movies that have the kind of perfect storm of high expectations so thoroughly dashed that the Prequels had. I don't find it hard to grasp why he decided to move on.

Religions suck, but if you look at what the Oiled One REALLY said, you'd be burning in hell sooner than you can find any portion where he mentions The Creator setting you on fire.

I totally get why they made the Star Wars Plinkett reviews, but I don't have the slightest clue why they made Space Cop. It's really puzzling.
