I did not like Space Cop

So I just finished watching the long awaited Space Cop and I must say I'm quite disappointed. The movie is quite bad. But not entertainingly bad. The story felt like they made it up as they went along, the acting was awful (especially our leads unfortunately), it's like they weren't even trying to make a good movie anymore. Apart from the CGI and the miniatures - those were nice but the rest of it was just terrible. I would forgive bad sets, technical details or things of that nature as a result of a micro-budget production but not the bad writing. I wasn't expecting academy award material but I was expecting at least something clever. The thing is that the technical side is actually mostly ok. There are some technical issues with the soundmix and adr that were a bit distracting but that's not the problem. The problem is that they tried to make a comedy again for some reason but the humor fell completely flat, the dialog was painful, both Rich and Mike's performances were mostly just obnoxious. The movie reminded me mostly of their 48 hour project, it was that level of quality. Overall the movie feels like a bad idea that got somehow turned into a movie, without thinking things through, that was then pushed out of the door just to get it over with. Even the numerous references to other RLM stuff did not make up for the awful script.

I have to agree with others that SC is definitely a leap back from FF. What happened ? Did you guys forget to take your brain medicine ?

So after watching the commentary track I'm willing to cut them some slack. I did not at first realize that they had such problems even finding any actors for the movie (one would think that the patreon dollars might help in this area), so that's why they ended up having to do it pretty much themselves for the most part. Still, the idea to make both lead characters so annoying was a bad one, because you just lost the audience in the fist 20 minutes of the movie. Like I said, I liked the CGI, the miniatures, all the special fx, how the movie looked overall, that was all fine. Unfortunately it was all in service of this dumb "nonmedy" script that is really on par with the 48 hour project (which took 48 hours to make, not years). I'm sure they can do better than that. Perhaps it's good that SC is finally done so now they can take a step back, take a deep breath and think of a solid script first, then make the movie.

PS: I still like what they do on YouTube which is fine in a silly sketch here and there but stretching it out to a feature length movie did not work in my opinion.

True, the price for the movie is quite high. After watching the movie it feels a bit cynical to set the price so high while it seems that the entire budget for the movie was probably less than one month of patreon payment they receive.

I thought Rich was amusing in the role. Mike and that silly 1940's radio voice he was trying to do the entire movie was incredibly annoying though.

I have seen a review that was like yours, except they liked the dialogue and spent 10 minutes trashing the technical details (sound, lighting, etc).

I have also seen some reviews that say Mike is a good actor, Rich sucks, and others say that Rich is great, Mike sucks.

It's kind of interesting the diversity of opinions out there.

Well, I guess you'll have to see it for yourself. I guess my mistake was that I went in expecting an actual movie, which this is not, so I was disappointed. Also I'm not really some kind of a movie expert so the technical side was fine from my point of view. I'm sure someone else who has a trained eye for these things can find problems with the technical side as well. I only found the adr a bit distracting but that's not why I didn't like the movie. As I said I actually liked the cgi for example which was way too good for such low budget in my opinion. As for Rich and Mike's acting I think big part of the problem is the obnoxious roles they were playing. Perhaps that's what they were going for, which is a bad idea in my opinion. As for the dialog I just hated it. It was over the top, cliched and dumb. It's even more disappointing when you hear them bash this kind of crap in other b movies on their shows but then they make exactly the same mistakes ("look, we're parodying how other movies are bad by making our even worse"). Fart jokes, really ? There were couple funny moments through the movie but most of it was just bad.

Anyway, whatever. I just shared my opinion here, I guess someone has to point out the flaws otherwise it would be just a fan circle jerk. I think if they just farted in a mic for 90 minutes some people would still give it 10 stars.

Well, that's about as much time I'm willing to spend talking about Space Cop anyway :-) I hope next time they will try to make actual movie, that's all.

My faith in ratings on the IMDb site has been totally destroyed now. I've been told for a long time now that the ratings were 'fixed', meaning that somehow folks were getting in and were able to vote several times for the same movie. This title, "Space Cop" does not even deseve a 1 yet look at the high rating it was given!!!

Something is definitely wrong here because not even a halfway intelligent human being would like this movie. The acting was horrible, the filming was choppy, the dialogue was totally flat.

We tried hard to continue watching this movie but only managed to sit through 15 minutes of it. I gave it a 1 only because I couldn't give it a zero.

You guys must be new fans. They are not especially talented filmmakers, and this is their best movie believe it or not. I pirated it after paying for the disappointment that was feeding frenzy, and will probably buy the blu-ray now.... Any of you want to sell me a used copy on the cheap?

Nah man, I've been around since before HitB so I don't know. I mean I know the movie is called "Space Cop" so everyone can say "what did you expect, *beep*". I just thought they're going to do better this time, cause I believe they can do better. Anyway, whatever, I wonder what's next. It really seems to me that the SC was like something they started doing before they expanded so it's still on that level so I wonder what their next project is going to be. I mean I assume they actually want to make a good movie eventually, right ? If their next project is also going to be on this level then I guess I will stop expecting anything else and not buy the movies so everyone will be happy. And that's fine too, as I said I still enjoy the YouTube stuff (I actually even supported their patreon for a year).

PS: Don't pirate man, that's lame.
PS2: lol imdb beeping my Plinkett quote :-)

Their next project is a Mummy film. They're both writing and Len Kabasinski is Directing, so should be, uh, interesting to see.

that sounds great!

I completely agree. I love the RLM gang, but this "movie" was really disappointing on various levels.

This writing is downright awful. This is simply not funny, and actually painful to watch. I'm only 23 minutes in and think this is one of the worst movies I've ever watched. I have a feeling I'm going to have to watch it in multiple sittings, it's THAT bad.

I was hoping since they're pretty funny in their half in the bag videos, that maybe that would transfer to this. At the very least, maybe because they see so many movies, maybe some of that would rub off on them. Instead only the worst rubbed off, and this is just garbage.
Not worth money at all.
