Almost as bad as the AVGN Movie

It's interesting to compare this to the AVGN Movie.

Both are done by respectable youtube performers that have given us great and worthy classic gems that will always (?) be remembered fondly.

Both are abysmal movies, that try to make fun of the 'bad movies' that tried to be good, by being 'deliberately bad'.

I have never seen a movie that's 'deliberately bad' that has succeeded, and been actually funny.

What makes the 'bad movies' funny is that the makers were SERIOUSLY trying to make good movies, but were just so incompetent that they didn't know how, and as the result, the movies are full of ridiculous things and mistakes to laugh at.

When you try to do something like that deliberately, it's a bit like telling your audience when to laugh, when telling a joke, and also remarking "this is a really funny joke" in the middle of telling the joke. A joke, that wasn't even funny the first time it was told.

There's nothing funny about a fat, bad actor bumbling around the screen and falling into trash cans. Who are they trying to parody or kid here?

Many of the jokes were 'semi-funny' or 'stale observations' about the usual movie tropes. The 'pop-up-stuff' on the screen was sort of funny for a couple of seconds - but then it becomes just annoying and boring. There are at least twenty places in this movie, where you want to yell at the screen: "GET ON WITH IT ALREADY!", or "STOP WASTING MY TIME!".

Childish props, like the cartoon star on the 'Space Cop's clothes, killing innocent people (from other planets - I don't think anyone should ever be called 'alien', it's insulting, it's like the interplanetary 'n-word'), saying 'I didn't think. I never do.' in that weird voice .. are not funny.

How can these people be so entertaining in the short videos, and when describing the 'best of the worst' videos, but so boring in this film?

I think this trend of trying to make a 'bad movie deliberately' should end. People should try to make GOOD movies, but the thing is, they shouldn't mind if they can't get a huge budget - just do the best you can with the budget you have, and no one will mind the 'cheap-looking effects', if the story is good, and you have otherwise poured your finest selves into it.

I'd rather watch a good movie with 50 dollar budget than a 'deliberately bad movie' with 80 billion budget.

What makes those 'bad movies' funny, is that they tried to make good movies, but failed. They didn't create bad movies in purpose.

AVGN and these guys did.

The result is just lukewarm, boring, bad movie, that you really don't get anything out of, and thus have no reason to ever watch it again. Neither of these movies offer anything unique and new that you haven't seen before, that you can call 'entertaining', that you really want to watch over and over again.

Just look at movies that are almost endlessly re-watchable, and compare to these. Who would watch these borefests again?

And that horrible 'sync-effect' in the lead sound of the too-many-times-repeated song, holy crap that's done badly, and the melody stays in the one note way too long.. aagh!

My poor ears.

Even I could make better music than that song!

Just like the AVGN movie, I have absolutely no reason or intention to watch this thing ever again. Geez, does anyone?

Let's think of some reasons why anyone would want to watch a movie more than once:

- Immersive, complex story
- Effects
- Musics
- Atmosphere / "Feel"
- Acting Performances
- Beautiful / Interesting scenery
- Something never seen in other movies
- Clever twist
- Beautiful Costumes
- Amazing architecture of some buildings / castles / mansions / etc.
- Realistic or surreal depiction of another planet / dimension / reality
- To admire some particularly charismatic, skilled or beautiful or 'shining'
actor / actress
- Neat gadgets done in a way that makes you believe they're real

I could go on a bit longer, but let's stop here.

If you look through this list, and then look at some of the classics (Back to the Future, The Matrix, Fight Club, Bruce Lee movies, Ribon no Kishi (Morning Musume musical), etc.), you can easily check multiple reasons, or even all of the reasons for some movies.

(Feel free to replace my examples with your own favorites)

Now, come back to this movie and the AVGN movie, and go through that list with these two movies in mind. Anyone, who thinks even one of this small list's reasons rings true for either movie, is either drunk, lying, trolling, crazy, retarded mongoloid, under the influence of salvia / LSD / some other drug that makes -everything- seem amazing, has JUST arrived to this planet and these are the first movies they see, or just completely clueless about what makes a good movie.

And that's all I have to say about "Space Cop (2016)".

"I have never seen a movie that's 'deliberately bad' that has succeeded, and been actually funny."

That's personal taste isn't it?
One purposely bad movie that I mostly like is "Kung Pow".
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0240468/?ref_=nv_sr_1

That has a lower rating than even Space Cop.
Which means purposely bad is a niche comedy style not for everyone but it can work for some like me.
(Another example; the short film, Fist of Jesus, on YouTube.)

There were a lot of funny bits in Space Cop imo. My only complaint about SC is that it needed more jokes to keep the comedy momentum going.
Looking at the outtakes on the Blu-Ray, there was a lot of funny material that RLM left out. If a film is going full on for Samurai Cop cheese / camp, the so bad it's good stuff has to keep on coming.
If anything needed cutting, it would have been to trim the alien backstory / exposition in the middle of the movie which didn't add much to the comedy.

Maybe RLM got too tired doing it or they lost their nerve to make a full on so terrible it's good film.
But still, lots of SC was entertaining to me.

it is just in my opinion - imo - 🌈

What I find interesting is that both Mike and James are not just film buffs, but actually have education and training in regards to filming.

Kind of sad that they both churned out such "meh" movies, despite being able to deliver rather impressive and entertaining short videos online.

How is James not a film buff?

Never said he wasn't... try again. Here's the hint for you:

There were two gags that made me laugh in this movie: when Cooper is baffled that he can't smoke in the police station and when Space Cop chases down and murders Timmy. Outside of that there were a few moments which made me smile, like the alien sexy dance in the strip club. However, these few moments were enough to make the movie somewhat enjoyable to me. It's not good by any means but these moments are gold and memorable for me so I can't hate this movie.

I watched Space Cop at least 7 times.

- Immersive, complex story

Time travel cops who have to try to work in the current world. And some bizarre Aliens trying to save their planet. Mix.

- Effects

Love the creatures, weird smoke. Alien ship. Brain in a jar with arms.

- Musics

I love the Space Cop music, wish there were a soundtrack.

- Atmosphere / "Feel"

Space Cop does not have a single feel prob. b/c they shot it over the course of many years. But I don't care. I love the atmosphere of Space Cop and Cooper arguing in the rain.

- Acting Performances

Jocelyn Ridgley. That is all.

- Beautiful / Interesting scenery

Milwaukee.

- Something never seen in other movies

A manically depressed time traveler , a cop murdering a child ...

- Clever twist

Ok uhm... you might be right on this one.

- Beautiful Costumes

What ae you talking about. Alien masks were awesome. Blue head man. Space Cop. Dancers.

- Amazing architecture of some buildings / castles / mansions / etc.

Well.... hrm. Ok maybe.

- Realistic or surreal depiction of another planet / dimension / reality

Space Cop's apartment in the future.

- To admire some particularly charismatic, skilled or beautiful or 'shining'
actor / actress

Jocelyn Ridgley again.

- Neat gadgets done in a way that makes you believe they're real

Space Cop's iwatch that told him how to deal with suspects. Hilarious.

No way is this worse than the AVGN movie. Space Cop nothing spectacular but it kept me entertained throughout (though a few scenes towards the end were a little dull) and I got a good amount of laughs from it. Meanwhile I sat through the majority of the AVGN movie stone-faced, besides a few scenes that made me physically cringe. I agree that the film has its share of problems but if I had to sit through either again, I'd pick Space Cop without even a second thought.

ye I just want james to make small horror films. It's what he seems to have the most passion for as far as movies go. There's a genuineness to the monster madness stuff that peters in and out of the rest of his stuff.
