What happens if every kid uses their wish like this now?

Will they all get it?

Is this going to ultimately crush the dreams and wishes of every kid who makes the same wish and doesn't get it? Surely, more kids must have wished for the same attention after this film.

Do things like this, designed to make us all feel good about ourselves, actually do more harm for more people in the long run than good?

Discuss.

By that logic, communities, organizations, and groups shouldn't even try to create something so moving or powerful because it might not be able to replicate it for everyone.
I think this movie was not for the Miles but for us as adults. How these situations humanize ourself and how easily we can become disconnected from what's really important.

BatKid encourages us to get out and help one another. It should be our duty to help those around us.

I don't disagree, but here's the movie we don't get to see:

Thousands of kids trying to make the same wish and having it rejected. That movie won't be made and probably is going to be the case in every other instance of a kid asking for this, but if we pretend that doesn't happen, then I guess we can effectively convince ourselves it doesn't.

Did you know that $3000.00 could save a child in developing countries, which is half the cost of the average Make-a-wish cost to fulfill a wish? This particular wish was over $100,000.00 and many children's lives could have been saved.

I agree that people should help those around them, but I would also weigh potentially saving 30 lives over giving one kid a good day. Sway that however you'd like, but "helping" people should also require some common sense as to how resources can best be used rather than using them all in one place just so we can feel rosy for a little while.

Good points to be made however, MAW isn't a company that provides treatment. It gives children an opportunity to have a moment of their childhood back that was lost to an illness. There are many other organizations that give other services this one just happens to be for "wishes".

As has been stated, Make-A-Wish has never turned down a wish. This was not as originally planned, if you watch the film. They started small and people, inspired by it, made it grow beyond belief. If other kids want elaborate wishes fulfilled, I say why not? These are kids who are spending their childhood fighting cancer, undergoing aggressive treatments, while others get to be children. The point of Make-A-Wish is to give kids back a piece of their childhood. A worthwhile cause indeed.

People draw inspiration and hope from a great many sources. By all accounts, everyone involved in this felt tremendously uplifted and went looking for ways they could help, beyond just this event. How many scientists and astronauts were created because of entertainment, like Star Trek? How many people saw this and decided to give something of themselves to help their community? You can't say, definitively; but, even if it was just a few, it's a few more than existed before. Every journey starts with a step; every idea with an inspiration.

Fortunately, Ah keep mah feathers numbered for just such an emergency!
