Why didn't she - (spoilers)

...START AT 0001 AND WORK HER WAY UP UNTIL SHE FOUND THE @#@%%!!! KEYPAD CODE - it would only take a couple of hours

…tie him up while he was sleeping? Attack him while he was sleeping?

…drug the food? give him food poisoning?

…flood the place? start a fire?

…wait by the door with a weapon and hit him when he came in, then tie him up, then work her way through the codes starting at 0001?

…steal his cell phone?

THANK YOU!!

Ugh! It's just ANOTHER stupid Lifetime movie that I found myself shaking my head in my hand over. I really thought this one had hope.

I kept wondering why Jessica spent so much time trying to find an escape, when she clearly discovered it was a concrete bunker in the first 5 minutes?? I lost interest after that first 5 minutes! Clearly Simon is not Mister Rogers, and she could have used that butcher knife on Simon (as he does later on Robin) when he opened the bunker door.

Despite his love of the vintage era, I am sure he carries a cell phone. And even if he didn't, as we saw, he was carrying a gun when he gathered up Jessica's things at her house as Evan came home. After knocking him down, check for a gun and blow the security pad off its base. And if THAT doesn't work, the security door has hinges..use a butter knife to dismantle the hinges. Duh!

I thought you came up here to have a nervous breakdown. ..I decided not to have one.

She would have been noticed out of bed and there is the possibility of forgetting where she left off and not trying a combination.

tie...sleeping - same problem. And he would die before telling her anything

Attack - we saw him be stronger than her; too much risk. He likely would wake up and immediately get a hold over her.

Flood/fire - that wouldn't get her out and he wouldn't get them out. I believe he's so psychotic he'd rather die than be without her.

His cell phone may have a passcode. Same problem there.

Sincerely, jnorgle, the person that can't think of a better signature than this.

Oh absolutely! By the time she had settled into Simon's "routine", she definitely would have been caught!

However, I was referring to those first few moments literally as Simon enters the concrete compound. Jessica could have used the element of surprise on Simon as he entered the basement. Instead, she just kept tugging on the door handle, which clearly she knew wouldn't open. And she knew the windows led nowhere, because it was a concrete-walled compound. In the opening scenes, she is painted as this strong-willed character. Yet suddenly, instead of stopping and trying to use her rational mind which she had done toward Simon every step of the way prior, she just ran around like a caged animal.

I just didn't buy it. This scene was so unlike the character that had been previously illustrated for me as the viewer.

keypad, 4 digits, it would take years to get the right code.

OMG, thank you!!! OP - do you not realize that the possible number of combinations of 4 diff numbers is WELL into the millions, probably multi-millions,,,

More seriously assuming 10 seconds per try, someone should be able to exhaust all possibilities in around 30 working hours. She should have been able to pull it off on a couple of weeks.

Probably didn't happen in the movie because it didn't happen that way in the real life event.

This movie is based on the Ariel Castro case. Between 2002—2004, Ariel Castro kidnapped 3 women and held them prisoner in Cleveland, Ohio—Michelle Knight, Amanda Berry, and Georgina DeJesus were held against their will in his house on Seymour Avenue until May 6, 2013, when Berry escaped with her six-year-old daughter and contacted the police. Knight and DeJesus were rescued by police and Castro was arrested within hours. May 8, 2013, Castro was charged with four counts of kidnapping and three counts of rape; he pled guilty to 937 criminal counts of rape, kidnapping, and aggravated murder as part of a plea bargain. He was sentenced to life in prison without the chance of parole plus 1,000 years.

One month into his sentence, he committed suicide by hanging himself with bedsheets in his prison cell.

No the movie not base on Ariel Castro and kept woman base on Colleen Stan

Lara Croft Himiko! The First Sun Queen! This is Yamatai.

Assuming it was a 4-digit door code, it would be 10,000 possible combinations (10x10x10x10 - 10 choices per digit). That would presumably take a computer at least several hours to crack it by brute force. A human would take considerably longer than a 'couple hours', even more so under a stressful situation as Jessica was in.

If the code were any longer, that would go up exponentially. Even with the rhubarb marking the keys he used towards the end, she'd still have to attempt every combination from those digits, which would be 24 combinations. That is considerably less, but still daunting under pressure.

I doubt he has anything in the bunker that could be used against him, besides the knives and kitchen utensils. He wouldn't exactly have rat poison on his shopping list.

Flooding or a fire would only affect the bunker. It'd just end up killing both of them.

The rotary phone in the "home" was not connected, and he was probably careful enough to not bring a cell phone into the bunker. If he did though, she could try to get a hold of it. Smartphones (iPhones at least) allow you to make an emergency call from the lock screen without needing the passcode.

***Others have all ready answered this one. But also, he was watching them.

Also, others forgot, they didn't know how many digits the code was AND if it included the # or * symbols. That makes it even harder to figure out. ***

These can be answered together: if he died, they'd starve to death.

…steal his cell phone?

*** He's been doing this to many women for years. He's probably got it down to a routine.***

reply

Cell phones have signal strength problems in basements as it is, and his is definitely more sealed off so doubtful a phone would be of any use.
