Prayer in the schools

It's only natural that many people are going to ask why such a miracle took place in Cokeville and not at Sandy Hook or Columbine or other places. I don't know. But one thing that occurred to me was that Cokeville was a community that had a lot of people of faith. Most of the children were taught to pray. The parents were praying people, the teachers were praying people, the administrators were praying people. There are praying people in those other communities, too.....but there are also a lot of other people in those communities who go out of their way to keep prayer out of the schools. Too many of those people try to make a diligent effort to make the schools a place where there is freedom FROM religion. You can't wear T-shirts with religious designs because you might offend someone. You can't wear religious jewelry because you might offend someone. A teacher can't keep a Bible on her shelf because she might offend someone. Cokeville had freedom OF religion. During that disaster everyone was praying, even in the schools. Take God out of the schools and who is going to be there to help?

reply

That's absolutely ridiculous and just all-in-all incorrect. The reason it's not allowed in most schools is because the Christians only want THEIR religion in schools. If you allow one religion, you have to allow them all & I'm quite certain Cokeville wouldn't have been too fond of kids or teachers carrying around the Satanic bible, wearing clothing with upside down crosses & pentagrams, teaching from the Qur'an, etc. They had freedom OF religion you say? Or was it freedom of YOUR religion? Christians have an awful lot to say about why their religion should be taught and allowed here, there, and everywhere - while at the same time protesting and giving a million and one reasons why no other religions should be accepted at the same places. Time for a reality check.

Hear, hear, needsmoreclipping. It's getting more and more infuriating to have to tolerate the religious nimrods. It makes me want to puke every time there's a shooting in a school, and all these morons can say is, "Well, it's because you took god out of schools." Wrong, idiots. It's because it's too easy for any psychotic f---head to get his hands on high-powered weaponry.

And another thing -- all of you believers need to step back and take a look around at the company you keep. I know you like to blame atheists for the world's ills, but it's well-documented and proven that most mass murderers, school shooters, terrorists, etc. were raised religiously. Food for thought…

reply

Your the moron. An AR15 isn't a "high powered" weapon. I know that's what Rachel maddow told you but that ugly bitch doesn't know *beep* Your perfectly ok with censoring any speech or expression you don't like but perfectly ok with teaching young children how to perform homosexual acts properly. Liberalism is truly a mental disorder.

The USA is founded on Christianity, and remains a Christian state. That is why Christianity remains an important element in day-to-day life.

reply

What? Are you serious or trolling? For starters the USA was absolutely NOT founded on Christianity. Secondly, the USA is not a state. Last but not least.... Christianity remains an important element in day-to-day like of whom exactly? Christians? Please, think before posting such rubbish.

By using that logic the last church shooting shouldn't have happened.

I mean, they do pray in church still don't they?

Maybe Jesus couldn't hear over the gunfire.

reply

So whenever someone is tragically killed, it's their own fault because they simply didn't pray hard enough. You don't necessarily want god in schools; you want YOUR religion forced upon every member of society. I doubt you'd like it if your kid(s) went to school and were forced to worship and follow the principles of a god other than your own. No one infringes upon your freedom to practice your religion, so when you start forcing your religion on those who do not share it or conform to it, well that's when I take issue with Christians.

That being said, I would be delighted to have children learn about Christianity and other religions in schools, specifically all the harm it has caused throughout history including wars, the crusades, the inquisitions, 9-11, ethnic cleansing, the suppression of women, the suppression of homosexuals, honor killings, suicide bombings, arranged marriages to minors, human sacrifice, burning witches, and systematic sex with children. Then we can examine the bible and introduce kids to the Christian god who is, as Richard Dawkins says, "arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty, ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully."

I was going to write something but then I read your post. Enough said!! Thank you.

As the slogan goes, I am good WITHOUT God. I do not need the thought of some supernatural being constantly watching over me and the fear of some kind extended damnation and suffering to be a decent person and have morals.

Funny how people praise god when someting good happens, but none of them ever point out Gods doings when a bomb goes off.
I mean where was he when these people took this school hostage? Why did he not stop them to begin with?

Freewill? Yeah...... what about peoples free will to not get killed or harmed by others?

When you look at Christianity too closely it begins contradicting itself on many levels. Not to mention rips off a great many older religions.

Then again funny how Jews, Christians and Muslims all worship the same God, yet this same God apparantly tells them to do things differently to each other like kill each other in his name. (Heck most Christian churches cannot even agree on how God's will should be done. Catholics vs Protestants anyone?)

Tell you what, when a God decides to visit me personally instead of expecting me to have faith via some mistranslated centuries old book or some person he talks to exclusively via telepathy, I'll believe in the guy/gal/thing.
Esepcially when he decides to make rapists and child molesters spontaneously combust.

And heck, the day I meet a true Christian I will have a heart attack. Everyone I have every met has been a hypocrite. All god this and god that until put to the test.

If you claim to be a real Christian who does exactly as his/her God commands, I'll call you a flat out liar.
at least 50% of the worlds problems (and this is being generous with that number) would be solved if all religion died out.

I will respect your opinion. But I probably still think it's mind numbingly stupid.

Funny how the OP's words almost exactly mirror that of some middle eastern extremists, when they talk of their religion lacking the widespread importance that it should have within their communities and in the lives of the children.

A delusional zealot, is a delusional zealot...no matter which continent they inhabit.

Ignorance, is the true enemy.

The god you believe in, is clearly not worth your time.
