In this episode, since she works with a government agency she was able to get info texted to her. I believe the first message she got was about him being injured and the second was about his condition getting more severe or he died. When she made the phone call, I remember she wanted to talk to the person again and told them how much she loved them.
Since they were also flashing to linus' dad flatlining, they could possible open the new season at a funeral, hiding Kirsten until after it to make the audience think she died in the stitch, but it could be Linus' dad or the director lady's loved one.
It was Maggie's son whom she called in the virus episode. They were estranged because he was upset that she was always working and not there enough for him growing up or something. I want to say his name was Ben, but I could be wrong on that.
