Clearly they hated the 90's

Every documentary has a spin. It is clear that the makers of this documentary hated the 90's. Nothing but bad news and the dark side of events is presented in this documentary. Have been watching with my daughter to show how I loved the 90's and nothing but gloom and doom is presented. Yes Waco, Matthew Shepherd, and Jeffrey Dahmer happened. It was also the heyday of Nickolodeon! Cover some of the happy stuff too.

Put a bird on it.

Happiness does NOT make it into the history books.

The "heyday" of a children's network in the 1990's would have had as much significance as a retelling of how many raves I went to in the 1990's. Besides, I thought they did a pretty good job covering more lighthearted subjects, but to be honest, there certainly was a lot of bad stuff that happened, as there is in EVERY decade. Luckily for me, I missed out on a lot of that celebrity BS in the 90's since I actually had a life back then, which is why I had such a good time.

This documentary was made was because ALL over the Internet, on message boards, on Youtube comments, you name it, you always see people saying "I miss the 90's!!!" or "The 90's were the last great decade!!" and stuff like that. The 90's are undeniably the most beloved decade on the Internet.

I think this documentary was made to show people that the 90's weren't TRULY great. There were several horrific events in the 90's, some of those horrific events have been long forgotten, like the 1998 US Embassy Bombings and the Matthew Shepard murder. I didn't even know who Matthew Shepard was until I went on this board!

I also think that the reason there's a question mark after the word "decade" in the title is because were the 90's TRULY the last great decade?

Even though the 2000's gave us 9/11, the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and the 2008 economic recession, we also had Christina Aguilera and "Invader ZIM"! I also loved a lot of female fashion in the 2000's as well.

Gen Xers came of age in the '90s and now we've inherited the media.

And, if you think about it, that makes sense. People who grew up in the 90s were really the first decade of people who are now adults and old enough to actually feel nostalgic about things that actually hide internet access at the time and the internet has been a part of their lives. The current generation, just haven't got around to feeling nostalgic just yet as much as 90s kids, and people who grew up in the 80s may have used the internet and still do but they probably aren't as into it as younger people who actually grew up with that sort of thing.

It's on the History Channel so I certainly think they should focus mostly on actual historic events more so than pop culture type of stuff, but some of that sort of breaks both grounds. Something like the OJ trial could be considered both for instance.

The issue is, certain things seem almost contradictory. Like this thing doens't know what it wants to be. They have flashy images of Tamagatchi's, and things like that before and after the commercial breaks, and at the end talk about how it was such a peaceful time. Maybe it is in comparison to now or other decades, but it just seems weird and contradictory to say that after all the bad things they previously talked about.

The only truly light hearted things they talked about was Toy Story, and maybe West Wing and the internet type of stuff. But they put a serious spin on West Wing and same with Roesanne about the economy.

I thought it was odd - but clearly intentional on the creators' part - how they chose not to cover a huge number of important people, events or phenomena, even when some related ppl were interviewed.

- Princess Di
- Chicago Bulls, MJ and arguably the golden era of the NBA
- Monica Lewinsky
- The Simpsons
- Gianni Versace's death
- boy bands, the Spice Girls
- the era of the supermodel
- the console wars a.ka Sony vs Sega
- Terminator 2
- the rave culture
- Dawson's Creek ;)

Princess Di and Monica Lewinsky were convered.

But yeah, they should have covered some of these things, it would have been more fun. But it is on the History Channel so I guess they were focused on historical type of things than pop culture of the time. A Simpsons clip or two was shown though anyways.

I would've liked to hear some about Power Rangers. I grew up in the mid 90's and it was huge. After that it was Pokemon.

I literally have no idea what Dawson's Creek is, but maybe that's because I was born in 1988 and just missed me being the target audience by just a few years. Though strange that I remember Saved by the Bell.

In any case I'm not the 90s kid, I don't remember much of the decade. I remember the Y2K frenzy and all the doomsayers and later the party of "THE YEAR 2000", but aside from that... And I was actually interested in current events from the very childhood, so I remember all that Bush/Gore debacle and going back- death of princess Diana. Ah... Spice Girls and boy bands too, I was too little to catch that Nirvana train though

They described the 90´s too positively.
They even called it a decade of peace and prosperity.
It was a decade with a huge economic crisis when unemployment went from 2 % to 10 %. When public services was dismantled that was the so called prosperity.

And for peace it was a full scale war in Yogoslavia were houndreds of thousands of people died and also the wars in the Caucasus like Chechnya.
