Yet ANOTHER expensive money-loser for Disney?

Can anyone remember a studio crankiing out one huge-budget money loser after another like this?

Take the Marvel hits away and it's downright scary!

Now...granted...this hasn't opened yet but it just seems like Disney spends a fortune on EVERY film and they just can't tap into what the public wants to see. I really like most of their films but they just don't put enough butts in seats to cover the exorbitant production costs.

reply

Hasn't all of the classic remakes played in huge amounts of money for them? That is why they keep making them. They realized how powerful nostalgia is.

reply

OP is a retard. If this formula wasn't working out they wouldn't be remaking a live version of literally every IP they can dig up

reply

lol, yeah, exactly XD

reply

Could be worse....they could be WB who flubs the surefire things and only gets a hit when they dip into the ridiculous like Aquaman.

reply

WB had zero money losers last year and they released 28 films!

reply

You’re arguing yourself

reply

Money losers and hits are two different things, you club footed baboon.

Stick with billbrown; you're out of your league here.

reply

26 of 28 were "hits". The other two broke even.

Satisfied?

Disney had 9 films at least 4 lost a ton of money. The jury is still out on Poppins but it doesn't look good.

reply

And yet for 2018, they appear on the list starting at #6. 1,2 & 3? Disney. In fact, Aquaman is their one entry in the top 10 highest earners of 2018. They had 13 in the top 100. Disney put out 10 and ALL of them are in the top FIFTY.

But hey, that Teen titans Go to the movies sure hit like a house on fire.....if you listen to the DC Zealots.

reply

What part of my OP where I say "take away Marvel and it's downright scary" did you not understand?

reply

Disney had 9 films at least 4 lost a ton of money. The jury is still out on Poppins but it doesn't look good.

To some people, art is all about money.

You're obviously one of those people.

Goodbye.

reply

Why would you think you can take away the Marvel movies?

Disney owns Marvel, therefore they count as Disney, theres no "take the Marvel hits away", you're arguing an utter strawman point ffs!

Why not say "take Pixar away"?

Or, to take it too its ridiculous conclusion, "take away any movie released by Disney that made money and its downright scary!"?

Such a stupid argument.

reply

Is it really "stupid" to point out that only one of Disney's four "silos" is consistently performing well? Especially when everything they produce carries a huge price tag?

Star Wars is circling the drain with one of the most rapid, violent collapses in cinematic history . Their last film lost over 100 million dollars and they still aren't even close to recouping the 4.2 billion dollars they paid for Lucasfilm.

Live Action is in absolute tatters. Look for Dumbo to be the next costly misfire/under-performer hot on the heels of Mary Poppins Returns/Nutcracker/Christopher Robin/A Wrinkle in Time.

Animation, both WDAS and Pixar, routinely struggles to break even. Universal's Illumination has now become the most profitable animation studio in the world and now with John Lasseter gone the two studios may be entirely rudderless.

reply

How do you know they arent close in recouping the 4.2 billion paid ? movies alone have made them 3 billion profit , and merchandise figures

reply

They have not made close to "3 billion in profit" from the films and now they are experiencing negative ROI with Solo losing over 100 million dollars.

True, at first, merchandise was red-hot and if it had remained so after The Force Awakens we would be closer to recouping the acquisition cost but alas...from all accounts...Merch has been in the toilet for the last couple of years.

reply

do you have facts to back this up? can you show me what profit they have made on there star wars TV and Movie numbers since they bought lucas films

reply

Well...it's simple math. 4.3 billion in worldwide ticket sales means they received.about half of that best case scenario. So...2.15 billion and then you have to subtract production costs for all four films which would be roughly 900 million=1.25 billion left over and then P&A costs for all 4 films would subtract another 400 million.

Total profit to date 825 million. Do you think TV and Home media is picking up the other 2.2 billion? Also, Fox has the rights to the original two trilogies so they haven't benefited from that...only now since they are paying multiple tens of billions for Fox.

reply

so your assuming ? so you bascially have no idea , so until you present the facts, you have no idea.

reply

Are you serious?

I'm "assuming" nothing. The box office receipts are 4.3 billion.

Fact.

Anyone with even rudimentary knowledge of the movie business and it's resultant costs would not question my general breakdown of it.

YOU are really starting to embarrass yourself and should probably stop like...now.

LOL...3 billion in profits from the Star Wars films...oh me.

reply

Obviously you didn't read my post , I challenged you to prove that Disney haven't recouped the 4 billion they bought Disney for , you failed , it's my view that with the movies , tv shows , merchandise they have, but I don't have the facts nor do u, so to say I'm embarrassing is rather foolish of you , the only one that's embarrassing is you , and rather stupid

reply

No...I responded directly to you about the one thing we DO know...that the films have not made "3 billion in profit" as you embarrassingly asserted.

reply

Ok, prove im wrong , show me facts?

reply

I already did. It's literally impossible that they have cleared 3 billion in profit from the films. Even if they kept every cent and the theaters got nothing in the end it wouldn't equal 3 billion in profits once you take production costs and marketing into account.

reply

Show me queen, show me Disney profit and loss , prove it or shut up

reply

Lol...prove to me there is no Flying Spaghetti Monster. Prove it or shut up!

reply

because there isn't one, now show me Disney profit and loss

reply

Once again...do you not know what the industry standard is for exhibitors and studios and their share of ticket grosses because this whole 3 billion in profits argument is laughably impossible on it's face.

reply

Prove it

reply

Lol...you are beyond DUMB.
...O.

reply

Explain? please provide me evidence, you cant can you , so until you can, STFU

reply

Does this help, lol?

https://www.nasdaq.com/symbol/dis/financials?query=income-statement

reply

Thank you , Queen, looks like disney is doing rather well , so lets cut this bullshit numbers game

reply

Honestly, it took less than 30 seconds. Google is my best friend (perhaps my only friend - sniff!).

reply

Oh...I'm sorry...where is the breakdown for Star Wars films profits?

The sad thing is that you think this backs up your argument.

:D

Once again...these financials have nothing to do with what you asserted.
You said they have made "3 billion in profits from the Star Wars movies".

Own it! Don't change the subject now that some random poster inserted company-wide financials.

reply

Ok, show me otherwise, show me the profit and loss for Lucasfilm specifically Movies and TV Shows otherwise its Game set match, I win, go .

reply

LOL...you are such a dummy. At least you are able to understand what a ridiculous claim you made about "3 billion in profit from the movies alone" that you are now inserting ALL of Lucasfilm including TV.

LOL

Why are you changing the criteria. They made 3 billion in profit from the "movies alone", right? You do realize that exhibitors get a bit of a cut from a ticket sale, right? And that there are fairly substantial production and marketing costs for these films?

And you still can't do the math...

Hey here's an idea...under your philosophy...unless we have an official financial documentation from a studio itself we musn't call ANY film a flop OR a success from now on. It doesn't matter, if you don't have an official documentation from the studio, nothing can be called a "hit" or a "flop" anymore.

You better contact entertainment sites like Variety and Deadline as they routinely call movies "smash hits" and "costly flops" all the time and yet I'm sure they aren't given the specific costs and profits from the studios.

reply

Sites also refer to films and their "break even" points. Do you think for one second that information is given to them from the studio itself? Lololol

reply

Im waiting queeny, prove it to me

reply

For christ's sake just show us some sources or stfu. You know, when you do a big study for a school project, you need to back what you are saying with dources. That's how it. You can speak smart without knowing what you are talking about otherwise.

reply

furiousstyles says:"Movies alone have made 3 billion profit"

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Have you not noticed that with all of the people that routinely gang up on me on these boards that NO ONE has jumped in here in your defense? This statement alone disqualifies you for serious debate. On it's face...It's IMPOSSIBLE.

'Nuff said.

P.S. I know, I know..."Prove it's not true!" You're just unbelievably dumb. Please, billbrown, COME BACK. Someone that can at least be challenging from time to time.

reply

Prove me wrong...I dare you I double dare you muther fucker ..... is marcelo Wallace a bitch, oh and don't forget lucasfilm profits

reply

"Prove me wrong...I dare you I double dare you muther fucker ."

...aaaaannnnnddd this is the point where I stop.

The old adage is true..."argue with an idiot long enough and you begin to look like an idiot".

reply

I win , game set match

reply

You clearly have no clue just how big Disney are. The profits they receive from the studio part of the business is dwarfed by all the other stuff like theme parks and TV, so they'll not worry anytime soon.

It doesn't matter what they spend on their movies, they have enough hits to carry the failures. Not only that, they have plenty of merchandising opportunities.

Cars is the big example. Toy Story is the big winner when it comes to box office, Cars is one of the worst performing franchises in Pixars library. So why do they persist with Cars?

Because bar NONE, Cars is the biggest merchandising draw that dwarfes every other Pixar property and makes Toy Story look like pocket change.

Disney has ZERO to worry about.

Yes, Star Wars is getting diminishing returns, but lets not be forgetful here, before Solo there was the following:

Force Awakens - $2.068Billion
Rogue One - $1.056Billion
Last Jedi - $1.3Billion

Sure, Last Jedi whilst making a profit "potentially" has also lost over $700million when comparing to Force Awakens, but its still a profit.

Inspite of peoples bitching about Jedi, the final in this new trilogy is unlikely to drop below a billion and will still be profitable for Disney.

Mary Poppins might not have set the box office alight but its in profit.

As for your claim that Pixar routinely struggles to break even, lets have some facts get in the way of your ramble.

Incredibles 2 cost $200million to make...... made $1.2billion
Finding Dory cost $200million to make...... made $1.028billion
Toy Story 3........

And as for your laughable claim that WDAS struggles as well....

Tangled, Wreck-it-Ralph, Frozen, Big Hero 6 and Moana all said "Hi there!" Even Wreck-it-Ralph 2 whilst slightly underperforming in comparison to the first movie, is still in profit.

reply

Well I'm not going to see it!

It looks like a sticky mess.

reply

Disney is desperately hoping that you are not the norm. This could be yet ANOTHER high-priced Turkey...ermmm...I mean Elephant.

LOLOLOLOLOL

reply

Looks like the answer to my OP question is unfortunately a ..."yes".
