Here's the problem with this "competition"

The main problem is that the rules are unclear - are they supposed to create something attractive that will sell in the marketplace, or are they supposed to create a beautiful work of art?? The judges can't seem to decide on what their standards are.

I think it depends on that week's judge.

This past week I used a word for the judge I have never used before and I even used it correctly, pedantic.

From Wikipedia

Adjective

pedantic

* Like a pedant, overly concerned with formal rules and trivial points of learning.
* Being showy of one’s knowledge, often in a boring manner.
* Being finicky or fastidious, especially with language.

Well, I think the idea is that you cover all the bases -- comfortable, functional furniture that is artistic and unique from a design standpoint. The few times someone has achieved that, they've been rewarded.

When the contestants have failed to meet both sides of the challenge, the judges seem to differ on which they prefer. I think that's OK, because it pushes the contestants to try to achieve both, since they're never sure which the judges will like.

I think it is understood that these designs need to be practical in order to be made into furniture that can be sold. Each week after every challenge, the winning challenge appears on wayfair.com. I am not sure how much time there is between the challenge and being ready to sell at Wayfair but that is part of the challenge for sure, to make something that people will buy and use.
