wtf accent

I was excited to see this movie until I heard her awful accent. Does she normally talk like that or is it for the movie? Either way I think my ears bled a little :(

Where are they from? I am a 4th generation resident of the town where this takes place (the only reason I was aware of its existence before they put the trailer on the front page of IMDB) and I have never heard that accent before. Makes me wonder if they actually spoke with anyone in town during the filming. I know someone from Minnesota with a pretty strong "midwest" accent and that's the closest I can liken it too, but it's still off. It kind of reminds me of a cross between a stereotypical Minnesotan accent and a stereotpical Boston accent, which now that I think about it is pretty funny.

We have some hood rats here with ghetto accents, and my aunt randomly speaks with a Boston accent, but oh well I just wanted to complain, on IMDB, where everyone seriously considers and respects everyone else's opinions.

That sounds about right lol Boston-Minnesota ha! I'm from eastern Ohio (near Pittsburgh,PA) and we do not sound like that at all.

I think the Minnesota 'call' on the accent is pretty good. She's got the flattened "a" (close to the Great Lakes - which could mean lotsa places), the hard "r" (most prominent in Michigan), the nasal tone (nonspecific, but more prevalent in the Midwest), but also a hint of sing-songy prose - which is heard anywhere from northern Wisconsin to North Dakota (a vestige of Scandinavian immigrants).
That places northern Minnesota probably at the top of the list, with other northern Midwest options out there.
(I may have made this whole accent thing a bit too....analytical, but what the heck)

reply

It's one of the many reasons I won't be able to watch this...I don't care if it's considered accurate or not - it's awful.

reply

I hear just a hint of a Minnesota accent. I hear more of a stereotypical Chicago accent myself.

reply

Yep, Chicago. I don't hear Minnesota at all. If anything, there's a touch of 'Sconnie.

reply

Would you have been ok with Bernadette's voice?

reply

Who?

reply

Agreed.

I'm from Cleveland about 40 minutes from where Ashtabula, OH is (where the film takes place.) And no one from within 100 miles of Cleveland has the accent she uses in the film. It has a very Minnesota / Wisconsin accent to it.

After the film someone in the theater said ' it wasn't a terrible movie but having people thing that Clevelanders have the accent killed it for me!.'

reply

Believe it or not - the cast did an interview for AOL and Melissa said that when they got to the small town, they heard the accent several times & so they knew they were doing it right. Yes, I eyerolled. So if hearing it for an entire movie wasn't enough, the cast is actually perpetuating that the accent is spot on in interviews.....

reply

Ironically a family from Minnesota decided to visit Ashtabula, OH for the weekend.

And this is what we have to show for it lol

reply

LMAO - fabulous

I think parts of the movie, including the accent were meant to be exaggerated. Almost like a parody. This would apply to the ridiculous sex scene as well.

...and I am just going to have to feel this way until I DON'T feel this way ANYMORE!

reply

Maybe but I live in Ohio - very close to where the movie takes place and I've been told by numerous people from all over (as I travel often) that the Ohio 'accent' is nothing more than a 'loss of accent.' Aka, we don't have one.

Only the truly southern parts of Ohio (IE Cincinnati) have that southern 'draw' but everyone else we're kinda just...meh.

reply

I know this thread is 10 months old, but this is Amherst, ohio. Not ashtabula- west of cleveland not east

But still, I'm also from ohio and have NEVER heard anyone speaking with Hopes dialect here. Just as was stated ear
Ier, southern ohio (closer to kentucky and/or west virginia ) will have a drawl. But not this JFK meets scandanavia thing Melissa was doing.
