Good catch. It's probably a "time-saver" for pacing, etc. On sitcoms such as "Seinfeld" and "Married With ... Children," the front door is frequently open so neighbors can pop in. Getting up to answer the door--unless it's specifically related to the plot--would be a waste of TV time.
