White racism

The punch line at the end look like racism to me. Even if it was a question asked to himself it's make it feel like white people have privileges. Wasn't the goal of the movie to solve racism not provoke it?

reply

Yeah I scoffed at that too, Harvard is an elitist school that all people of all colors would love to attend, I don't get a free pass in just because I'm white

reply

Yes, people of all races want to go there, but a lot of people couldn't see a black kid from the hood wanting to go there. They'd think he would

And white people do have privilege. That doesn't mean that our lives are easy, just that in our society, our race is not discriminated against widely. Sometimes you will encounter individual prejudice, yes, and in limited contexts those prejudiced people might actually have power over you (like a boss, or if you attend a school with very few other white people.) That sucks and isn't right. But systematic racism? We don't face that. Schools rarely use quotas anyway - I think it's illegal - and white women have been the biggest beneficiaries of affirmative action by far.

Realizing that is one of the steps to actually eradicating racism. It's not pretending everyone has it equal these days. It's seeing how it isn't and addressing that.

White people do not have privileges. I want to hear those priviliges that white people have.

''A black kid from the hood'' If people of colors would realize that the day they will stop calling themselve thug, ganster or only stop calling their home ''the hood'', the hood will stop exist. As seen in the movie, the main character did realize it and is participating to construct a better life for himself the instant he quit his ''gangsterism'' (at the end).

''That doesn't mean that our lives are easy, just that in our society, our race is not discriminated against widely.''

So white people have privileges but their life isn't that easy. How absurd is this?

''our race is not discriminated against widely'' ummm... i think you are not aware or are ignorant of many historical facts and current one that is discriminating white people.

''widely'' Does that mean white have privileges because it's not widely?

''systematic racism'' is a myth. Tell me what is this systematic racism that only affect people of ''colors'' and i will happily respond to you.

Whoops, sorry, this posted before I meant to. In the first paragraph I meant to say "People would assume he didn't care about academics and was just interested in gangs, drugs, sports, music, and keeping his street cred."

Who ever said that white people get a free pass?? And a question...what percentage of people who have attended Harvard would you guess are Caucasian and what percent of people who have attended Harvard would you say have been African-American?

reply

You are asking the wrong questions. It is not the percentage of every race that attended the school that matters but what is the percentage of Black or African American compared to white people in the USA? There is 12,6% of Black or African American and 72,4% of white people. Is this normal that Havard have more caucasians than Black or African American? YES

reply

He said if he was white then people wouldn't be asking "why do YOU want to go to Harvard", which goes back to his teacher saying he doesn't have a shot and shouldn't apply. He never said white people automatically get in, it's just people thinking he's automatically aiming too high.

I never saved anything for the swim back.
