Completely overrated, lacks direction

I streamed this. This is CORNY stuff that definitely won't stand the test of time. It'll be like one of those supposedly cool 80s movie for youngsters that you kinda laugh about today.

It has quite a lot of slick imagery but that's about as far as it goes. It's like a bunch of "creative" commercials stacked up together. It tries to be a slapstick comedy and "thought-provoking" at the same time. And then overrun with clichés. That College letter that they always write... And they say *beep* I'm gonna get real on this" and write something extremely subjective that takes them in.

Getting into College presented as ticket to heaven, which it is not.

Every girl in the film getting into any kind of guy a second after looking at them without any apparent reason.

And that "punk" band? A three piece band that only mimes overproduced dance rock?

Big letdown.

I agree the movie lacks direction. Certain elements like the band just weren't scripted well. The biggest problem is the movie is mostly slapstick and then takes a sharp turn to attempt a more wise and philosophical tone in the very end. The main character's monologue in the final act was undermined by him becoming the very example he disavowed. He adds to the destruction of his community by helping to filter illegal drugs onto the streets, and then commits bank fraud and issues threats to get into his choice university. He played a part in creating the conditions and circumstances that he blamed on society.

I would much rather like to talk to the people who genuinely find this film true and insightful. Because, for a million con arguments I only see a single pro one: it did try to look different than the majority of the movies about the underprivileged black people (although "different" doesn't mean "realistic" in this case).
