Why is HBO's "Looking" so much better than "Cucumber"?

Both made by British filmmakers, both set in big cities, both about contemporary gay lifeā€¦but one is so engaging, and the other so very, very awful...

reply

beacuse not veery tv show or view on gay life is exactly the same. not better or worse, just different.

Looking was a complete and utter bore- I kept watching hoping for something that never came. At least Cucumber has more entertainment factor. Thank god Looking was cancelled!

reply

Well if you're expecting a second season of Cucumber you'll be disappointed.

reply

Here in the US, only the first two episodes have aired.

reply

'cucumber' doesn't need a second season anyone. that's what i love about, it captures one story, one point of view and to have it drag on and on and on like uh hem most american series, would seem unnecessary.

reply

Making more than one season is not dragging on and on. Look at the vast amount of TV shows that improved greatly after the first season. I agree Cucumber doesn't need a second season though, but that's because I thought it was rubbish for the most part.

reply

I've only watched 2 episodes and I agree that the lead character is awful. But at least the editing seems to acknowledge and profit from that and at least there are some people calling on their *beep* (unlike in shows like "Girls" or "Togetherness"). I'll watch the whole season...happier now that I know it has a limit and it won't drag on...but I do believe "Looking" was better. It was less campy and I guess that's exactly what a lot of people expected from a "gay" show. That's what most US gay movies lean towards to and that's what QaF gave them.
There is not much quality in the LGBT productions. I am not saying there is nothing at all but not as much compared to "straight" productions and perhaps that's what several LGBT people are used to and don't want to be challenged with no cattiness or sleazy people.
I just wished they both could co-exist.

reply

Oh, I came to like the lead character after the episode 3. When you finish the whole series, the very last moment of the last episode, you will find him beautiful, despite he is the same bald old man.

reply

Both series have different takes on contemporary gay life. Cucumber feels like it's being edited by Edgar Wright and has a much more of a higher beat to it. Where Looking is much slower and feels more intimate.

reply

Looking was a bore - Cucumber is engrossing.

reply

Cucumber is so much better than Looking. sorry.

reply

I LOVED them both. If you still insist that cucumber is rubbish, just make it to the Lance episode and be changed forever. It broke my heart in two.

Cucumber is much more engaging than Looking could EVER be...
