They blew it...

This really could have been great, and parts of it were. However, they wasted so much time on BS that went on way to long, and left out at least three or four critical times in his life.

They wasted time on the BS kidnapping of his son. That segment could have been 75% shorter. Then perhaps they could have covered his Mother's plane crash into the same Mountain as Dino Martin. These were too interesting and devastating things in his life, along with the Death of Sammy, and Dean.

They covered nothing about his later years in Palm Springs, his life with Barbara, and his death.

The thing just ended. They blew it...

I came here to vote on it, and they blew that too. You have to vote on each part individually. I guess that's OK, because the 1st segment was twice as good as the second. I'd give part one a 9, and part two a 5.

They cover his life up to his his retirement concert in '72(?). It uses the the songs he sung that night as the frame for telling his life's story until then. They do cover some of his life afterward, but not in any great detail. I can another documentary from HBO covering his "old Blue Eyes is back" period.

I agree, this could hve been very good, but they were just jumping all over the place and I couldn't enjoy it.

I still enjoyed it, because the music was nicely edited in, and the choices were good. I just think it could have been great, but too much time on nonsense, and no real ending to sum it up.

Those who were fans know that he retired in '72', and gave a concert. However, that was the first 2/3rds of his life. He came back bigger and better later. I would have liked to have seen that in 'this biography' to complete it. I don't think HBO will be winning any awards for this poorly directed and conceived documentary.

I agree it is not a very good documentary. They did not delve into his mob connections that much or his mother's death or his marriage to Barbara. it provided nothing new or interesting but it is always good to see him sing. His voice was magical.

It seemed to me that Frank's family might have had a major say in what was or wasn't covered (or just lip-serviced covered) in this doc.

It would have been fascinating to see what someone like Ken Burns would have done with a subject like him.

You're right. This is more like a "tribute" to Daddy, than a documentary.

I still enjoyed hearing all those tunes again though, and having some video of him while they were playing worked fine. However, a prize winning documentary....it ain't. But knowing HBO, they will find a way to win some cock-a-mamy award for it come Emmy time...lol.

I am sure there would not have been any documentary without his first wife,Nancy and his 3 kids approval...they would have had a say in the content..and they weren't' too kind to Ava or Mia..

reply

I believe Nancy and Mia are friends. I don't think Mia came off bad.
