Why the hell?

Why the hell was her laptop webcam always on? I consider myself pretty connected to technology but damn, her stuff was ALWAYS on. She was like obsessed with always being online.

Also, she sleeps with her bedroom door open? Seriously?

That afternoon when she came home and her door was open..umm, that is the freaking point when you get your locks changed. Get a gun, get a tazor, a knife, get SOMETHING.

Also, with all of that screaming at the end, not one neighbor called the cops? Really? I don't believe it.

I don't think her laptop cam was always on. I think a lot of the stuff we're seeing is through the eyes of the hacker. Emma doesn't know her webcam is on because it's been hacked.

It's very simple to put a piece of black tape over the eye of the webcam. When you want to use it, take off the tape, and then put it back. Keep it on that device at all times. The hacker hasn't been born who can see through black duct tape. Make sure it's always on there and that nobody pulls it off.

If the laptop is on, a ratter can force the camera to be activated at all times. Some are even capable of turning off the "camera on" light so the victim wouldn't always be aware.

Sometimes that does stop the light coming on when the person is legit using the camera, but if it's an older laptop they often assume that the light just broke.

LOL if you ever move out of mom and dad's house and get your own place, you'll likely find it strange and uncomfortable to close your bedroom door when there's no one else in the residence. You won't even have to close the door when you use the restroom ;)

I actually don't live with my parents, moved out after I finished college. I'm not sure why you felt the need to insult me when you don't know me, but I guess that's more about the kind of person you are than anything.

I still don't sleep with my bedroom door open and I do live alone in an apartment, of course smaller than the one she has in the movie. Break ins can happen and I sleep like the dead so I always make sure to lock my bedroom door. I'd feel more uncomfortable if my bedroom door was open all night.

reply

Why is that insulting? You're overly sensitive and/or ashamed that you live at home although everyone does at some point in their lives and many people are boomerang kids after college these days. Either way, it's outrageous to say that no one can sleep with their bedroom door open simply because you like to sleep with your door closed. I'm not closing my door at night, yet I don't find it impossible that someone would, particularly when they live with their family.

Can you not read?

I have always slept with my door closed, no matter where I lived. I'm not sensitive at all, you're just the one who made a baseless assumption and tried to insult me with a tired old "haha you live with your parents. when you grow up and move out, you'll see adults sleep with their doors open" joke.

Nope. My city has a high enough crime rate with random break ins and burglaries occurring that I wouldn't ever sleep with my door open.

I also never said that no one sleeps with their bedroom door open, you said that. I'm sure plenty of people do, I just didn't see it as a wise move seeing as how the character was a single woman in NYC with no defenses.

reply

I repeat: I wasn't trying to insult you given that living with your parents is not abnormal. I actually figured you were under the age of 18 (especially since this movie appeals to younger viewers), and surely you don't think every adolescent should be insulted that they live at home. However, at this point it's obvious that you're quite old and live with your parents and are very embarrassed by it since you're so incredibly insulted and defensive. If/when you do move out, you'll realize that most who of us who don't live with our parents just envy those that do and wish we could move back in and save a bunch of money haha. So stop being ashamed of your living situation and realize that you're blessed to have loving parents who continue to provide you with shelter... and maybe stop complaining when a character in a movie doesn't do everything in the exact same manner as you.

reply

Ummm I'm really confused ! The poster has said numerous times that they DO NOT live with their parents . That he or she has his own apartment !

reply

you're being a total *beep* man. you were trying to belittle them saying they hadn't moved from home, implying that they were old enough, but somehow incapable or not mature enough to have done so or something...then you kept carrying on, either purposely ignoring their responses or not reading them....just being a mega-douche, basically. anybody reading the thread can tell who the twat is here. except you apparently. twat.

reply

Sounds like you're rather angry about living at home! Must be a touchy subject. In your case, it does seem clear that you're living at home because you're very immature and lacking social skills. I wonder if you call your mommy a twat too when she cuts your sandwiches in triangles instead of squares 😊. It's irrelevant to the point I was making in my original post about sleeping with the door closed though.

reply

That's the best you've got? Calling me angry and recycling the attempted insults you used on the other people? You're a bit of a joke. Back to the playground with you, kid.

reply

The first scene was meant to show the Ratter hacking in to her devices and probably remotely turning on her cameras. This something most people wouldn't notice or look for probably just wonder why the battery was draining quicker.

reply

her cameras was highjacked and was on without her knowing

Sleeping with the bedroom door open is a matter of choice and perhaps perspective.
When I live by myself, I prefer to keep the bedroom door open. That way I can hear if someone is trying to break in. Of course I keep the front door well locked, both locks engaged. It also helps to have a sliding bolt installed. It is a manual lock and cannot be picked like deadbolts and regular locks. In that case an intruder will have to break through the door otherwise he'll try the windows, which I'm sure you've either closed or have a screw lock attached to the window sliding frame which prevents the window being opened all the way.

You'll feel better if you have a flashlight within reach. Also have a weapon within reach, a baseball bat, a short, wide stick, or a firearm if you want to go that far.

Remember, no house or apartment is constructed like a fortress. You have to consider how an intruder will want to enter your residence. The vast majority will only do so when you're not home. Only a tiny few have malevolent intentions wanting to break into a residence when the people are home-home invasion or single women.
