Was this remake necessary?

The original wasn't even good enough to warrant a remake at all, and the best thing about it - Slow-mo Ninja Mullet Boy was replaced in the remake by some dumb kid in a rabbit mask. Not to mention, the original was only made about 12 years earlier so it isn't as if there were huge advances in movie making technology.

Most pointless remake I can think of, and that's saying something.

I’d argue Psycho is worse because it’s a shot for shot remake. Although I’d rather rewatch the Psycho remake if I had to choose.

I totally agree. They could have cut scenes from the original and inserted them into the remake, and I doubt anyone would have noticed it.

I agree but I'm streaming it on IFC (again) so my guess is a decent profit was made by all involved. That would be the reason.
