I thought just the opposite. I liked the original. For one, watching a movie which is around say (guestimating) 95% shot-by-shot, word-for-word of the original is not only boring, but pointless. In fact, it's so boring that I'm paying more attention to reading/posting here than watching the movie as it's currently playing on my tv.
The cast on the original is so much better in many ways, and I'm talking EVERY, actor/character.
Let's start with the characters and how they were portrayed in the original: Paul and Karen- slightly geeky college guy, pining for the girl-next-door, always-be-best-friends-only, flirt for fun stereotypical blonde. Bert- never thinking, not so smart, kind of (sort of) a jock that probably enjoyed playing his sports on the game console than the field (I didn't see him as a full on jock, nor serious gamer, but he did seem like a slight mix between the two). Marcy and Jeff- both slightly snobish, with Jeff seeming more in the way of "I was raised in a posh English boarding school". But both seemed to know they could just skate by and party more than learn at college because their family money is all they really need in life. Deputy Winston- Southern country bumpkin cop who took the job solely to get access to the "lost evidence" supply of drugs and other party paraphernalia, which all turns him into a party girl magnet (a clear plus in his mind). Country Store Owner- another southern country bumpkin stereotype old gentleman who seems like the most southern racist guy you ever met, but turns out he speaks the way he does because he's an honorary black guy by the older teenage/college-age black locals. Pancakes Kid- who is seen later sitting near a warning sign since only the locals know not to interact with him- outstanding because, lets face it, nobody expects to see a silent, possibly slightly autistic, country kid suddenly jump up, perform stunning karate kicks, yell "PANCAKES!!, then go into attack mode. "Get the box" Store Clerks- they all did a great job of playing stereotypical, most country bumpkin, never went to school past 5th grade, "I'm just trying to protect my family", group of friends.
Characters as portrayed in the reshoot: The entire cast- Bland, boring, "I have no idea who my character really is, but, hey, I know my lines, if nothing else".
The original was, in many ways a comedic horror movie with all the jokes and laughable characters (sorry, but nobody can play the part of Deputy Winston better than the Giuseppe Andrews portayed him). I laughed hard in all the right parts watching the original, and still do (come on, now: PANCAKES!!!; The nougat? - why else would you steal a candybar worth $1; Karen explaining losing her virginity to her shower head- classic; the list goes on) With the reshot movie (definitely not a remake), the actors completely missed the delivery of and reactions to all of the jokes and comedic scenes. They just didn't play well. So far, not a lugh out of me.
I could go on with so much more, but, you get the idea.
I'm being extremely clever up here and there's no1 around looking impressed! What's the point in having you all? DrWho
You nailed it - there's no heart or effort behind this flick, it's just soulless and mediocre to the core. The original had a cast with good chemistry, a director with confidence in his vision, a scrappy DIY attitude yet a semi polished end product, and knew it was a fun horror/comedy and nothing more. This one took itself too seriously, and was like watching a high school cast re-enact your favorite movie but without understanding what's really happening. Nothing about it worked, and the whole thing really shouldn't even exist.
