I thought that was how it was somewhat similar to the book. The violent brother led a messy life and had a cluttered awful home; the brother who covered up for him ran the brothers' trucking biz and had an organized home. Seems like the rapist would "share" trophies with his brother and give any jewelry to Mom.

It's simple. He despised his brother. He didn't want anything to do with him any more than he had to. They were quite different.
