Confused - Question for those who have read the story - SPOILERS

It's been awhile since I read the story, but wasn't it Little Driver who actually raped her? In the movie it seems as though the brother just took pics while BD brutalized and killed the women. I thought it was the other way around in the story??

I didn't read the story, but I saw this synopsis on ask.com:

Later, she uses the detective skills she acquired while writing her novels to find her rapist, who turns out to be "Little Driver", and kills him. She also kills his two accomplices—his brother, "Big Driver", and his mother, the librarian from Chicopee, Ramona Norville...

I did read the story. Spoilers....she kills the younger brother because he is sitting in the older brother's truck. They look so much alike that she mistook her rapist for the one she shot. However, upon going in the house, she finds that the two of them were both getting off on Big Driver's assaults, so it justifies her killing him. Big Driver's entire family was insane and horrible.

that wasn't the OP's question. The OP said they thought from the story that it was Little Driver who did the assault, not Big Driver, as shown in the movie. From the synopsis with which I responded, that also states that it was Little Driver who did the assaulting. There was not a question about whether she killed Little Driver or not, the question was did Little Driver do the assaulting in the story, unlike what was depicted in the movie.

reply

I appreciate the responses, but like Alachua1 mentioned, my confusion is over what I think may have been a change to the original story. I recall the attacker being solely LD, and his brother BD was more of an accomplice. The TV movie made it seems the other way around.

Guess it's more horrific if the guy is big?

I too wonder why they changed the guys around.

This may sound like dumb question - I didn't read the book only saw the movie - but if in the book it was Little Driver who did the assault, why was the story called "Big Driver"? - if in the story all Big Driver did was video tape it (don't get me wrong - that is terrible too!) - why did King title the story "Big Driver"?

reply

I haven't read the book yet either. I wonder if it's because she thought it was 'big driver' and not his brother who did it? Hope someone who read the book can tell us.

I suspect it wa changed simply to fit in more with the title.

I don't remember. It's been a long time since I read it. But they were both giants anyway.

You don't sneak up on people in a zombie apocalypse, okay?

reply

From what I remember, Alvin is the one who rapes Tess, since he is "giant", she calls him Big Driver. However, further in the story, Tess finds out that Alvin has an even bigger brother (Lester), so she switches the nicknames. Alvin is now Little Driver and Lester is Big Driver.

I may be wrong, though.

English is not my primary language, but at least I speak more than you.

My take after reading the story was that first, Ramona's husband's suicide was patricide or murder by Ramona as he was found hanged.

It is a bit confusing. But at the end, Ramona tells Tess that she knew her son was going to rape someone as she "knew" by his behavioral traits and she trolled for victims for him.

Also, both brothers could be rapists - although I think it's inferred that it is Lester.

It's worded that whenever Lester was going into his rapist mode, Alvin was on the road driving the big rig, but Lester the bleach-spotted ring. It's like a bait and switch.

Lester had some "souvenirs" from his escapades but the other evidence such as handbags, identification, etc., were stashed at Alvin's house. Alvin was perhaps a fetishist as the evidence was in his house; Ramona pimped for Lester; and Lester kept the victims' undies as souvenirs.

Ramona got Tess' earrings from Lester probably as a thank you gift for sending Tess his way. She alerted him so he could strew the tire-ripping boards on the deserted road.

I laughed, I cried, it was part of me...

You're correct. Little driver raped her. She shoots Big Driver believing he's the rapist until she gets s closer look and realizes she's shot the larger brother rather than the rapist.

I suspect the changes occurred simply to fit better with the title.
