The Resolution [Spoilers]

This film got an undeservedly poor review in The Guardian, but I felt there was a weakness at the end.

Claus is acquitted on the strength of a lie told by a fellow soldier. The presiding magistrate announces the acquittal, which was unanimous, and goes on to say that she will state the reasons behind the acquittal. At this point, the scene fades out and we move to the final sequence. That, it seems to me, dodges the point, which must be that the magistrates are either convinced by Butcher's 'muzzle flash', or they have an agenda of their own, which is to acquit rather than convict whenever remotely possible. Either way, I think we should have been told more.

But poor show, Peter Bradshaw - this film deserved more than your pathetic two stars.

What do you expect from the Guardian? If a civilian charged with homicide had been convicted in the UK on the level of evidence below a reasonable doubt, the Guardian would be saying the conviction was a gross human rights violation

reply

I expect better film reviews. 'The Revenant' was lauded quite beyond its merit, while 'The Big Short' was dismissed.

On the other hand, I suspect your view of the newspaper itself is entirely partisan, and reject it totally. I don't want to get into an argument with you on that subject, but if you can recommend a better film critic than Peter Bradshaw I'd be grateful.

reply

Agreed, if you're saying that: the particular criticism you quoted was a valid one, yet 2 of 5 stars is too low for this movie.

reply

The point made by The Guardian is absolutely correct. The verdict is not explained, but apparently rests on the lie told by Butcher.
