Why did they butcher the translation of the title?

In German "Schweigens" means "Silences," not "Lies."

And for some reason, here in Latin America it's called LABERINTO DE MENTIRAS, a literal translation of the English title.

I'm from Colombia and in here it's called La Conspiracion Del Silencio AKA The Conspiracy of Silence

"Labyrinth of Silence" seems like a better title in any case. Maybe they just liked the alliteration of "Labyrinth of Lies."

Tell me the truth. Are we still in the game?

One can lie by keeping silent. It qualifies as a white lie, I think.
The lies Johannes was fed by his mother make him unable to speak when he realises his father was a nazi, and his balance of right\wrong shifts.
There is a point he tells that he cannot say how he would have reacted when he had been there in the time of the facts, when they face the camp to say a goodbye prayer.
Bauer told him it was a labyrinth. And he knew what he was talking about .

Maybe they liked the alliteration.
