Shot Entirely on an iPhone 5s !!

Amazing. Check Moondog Labs & Filmic Pro websites for more info. Wow!! He did it! Congrats on making cinematic History!

Yeah. It's cool! Good idea. Especially for those who are newbies in the industry. They can make a movie just using an iPhone!

reply

no. you still need quality audio.

And reasonable lenses, and some kind of lighting.

My first comment when watching the trailer: "This looks like it was shot on a phone." I don't see how this could have surprised anyone.

You know that being shot by a smartphone is not a good thing, right? It means the quality is not good, and they couldn't afford a real camera.

Wouldn't quite go that far, bpollen.

1. TANGERINE is a fairly decent movie, overrated as it may be.

2. Some filmmakers like to experiment with the medium and toying with the technology.

3. Parts of TANGERINE look good. But, the limitations do show through from time to time - particulary in terms of angles, lenses etc. And, remember, this wasn't just shot 'as is', there were special lenses utilized, as well as augmented sound, and, almost certainly, a lot of post-production work.

4. But, yes, by all means, if you can afford a 'real' camera, it blows away what any kind of 'consumer level' digital can achieve.

5. The 'excuse' a lot of these filmmakers use that they "couldn't have gotten this up close and interactive' with tradional cameras is the most B.S. thing I can think of! Movies have been made for well over 100 years. Any extremely talented Director could have made TANGERINES in a tradional way. Really, it's just a way to save $$$. When in doubt, follow the money.

Please also keep in mind it allows the filmmakers to remain unobtrusive, allowing them access to the streets of LA without permits and the expensive logistics of crowd and traffic control. The priorities are the story and characterizations, the equipment used is secondary as long as it does not conflict with the priorities. In this case the the gear fit mood of the movie, and is a GOOD thing.

You mean like filmmakers have done for over a 100 years??

Just because it's "new" and "hip" doesn't make it original.

reply

Yeah, except filmmakers haven't been shooting on cameras the size of the phone for 100 years. I would not prefer to shoot on a phone but it still worked out for this movie and I'm sure it made the bus and street scenes insanely easier to avoid getting stopped for having no permit.

You mean like how movies have done for over 100 years?

Just because something has been created recently doesn't mean it's a "new" thing. Cameras have gotten smaller - as they progressively had for over 10 decades. It doesn't mean a movie like TANGERINE couldn't have been made with a current day camera like 99.99% of other movies and TV shows are.

reply

And just because something has been done for a hundred years doesn't mean it's the way everyone has to do it.

The way this film was shot just works. It feels like you're watching the events unfold in real life, not in a glossy Hollywood sort of way.

Even if it's possible to get the same effect in a much more expensive way, shutting down streets and using expensive equipment - it just isn't necessary.

reply

Huh?

Whats so historical about making a movie with a movie camera. Is the history part using a cheap low quality camera? That's been done for awhile now. There's been at least a million low quality porn movies in video, film and digital and a somewhat lower number of other art house films using poor equipment and next to no budget.

Or are you thinking cinematic History like Hollywood is going to make the next Hunger Games or Avengers type movie using an iPhone 5S?

reply

Yes - it's obvious because the film quality is absolutely horrible and extremely distracting.

This is not 'groundbreaking'.

Not very original, but 'We accept the love we think we deserve.' Brilliant.
