What's with the Title?

Tangerine is a really good movie, but does anyone know why it's called Tangerine? Is it named after the color scheme?

reply

I think it's the color scheme/time of day.

I'm not 100% certain, but when Razmik leaves his home to try and catch the show, you can see the new air freshener in his car, that Alexandra gave him, is an orange/tangerine. That's what one leaning toward.

This may be sort of a strange interpretation, and I don't know if it's relevant as I'm NOT American (Scottish actually).

Back in the day a long time ago (sort of fifties and sixties mostly) if families were poor, the kids would get very lame presents in their stockings. And if the parents were especially poor, it was generally a Satsuma, a clementine or a tangerine instead of a toy or an actual proper present (my family grew up with nine children, one working parent, one other parent a gambling addict who pissed away all their money, this was LITERALLY all the kids got at Christmas).

It almost felt as if it were a nod to the fact these people were pretty poor with very depressing lives, they all hoped for more (the friend singing at the nightclub, or Sin Dee's wanting to marry Chester, etc) and yet they ended up no better off in the end, their metaphorical Christmas was no better than getting a tangerine in their stockings.

Just a strange observation. I know it's very unlikely but that's what it made me think of.
