Heavy-handed Message and Unintentionally Hilarious

Even though I adored Inside Out, this short that played before it was god awful, IMO. I was cringing in my seat, hoping that it would end on a high note, but it never did. I don't mind the idea of a sad, living volcano. But the way this short handled the lyrics without any subtlety or genuine feeling, I almost couldn't believe this was given an okay by Pixar. The facial animation was off-putting and the story being two volcanoes (of the opposite sex? what???) are somehow madly in love before even seeing the other or knowing the other even existed, seemed like such a tired concept to try and use.

They didn't explain how they magically faced each other when male lava shifted. He was behind the back of her head/body. We just had to accept that logic.

reply

Firstly, just because they didn't see eachorher doesn't mean they can't be in love--it's an inner beauty message. Secondly, two singing volcanoes isn't logical enough for you, but tiny people in your mind controlling your emotions passes your logic test? Seriously?

haha brown-tylerca. your comment made erupt with laughter so intensely I spit hot coffee all over my computer

The entire story of Inside Out is metaphorical and I think it treats its characters and story with alot of intelligence, respect, and emotion. But Lava was just spoon feeding the themes to the audience

reply

OP: Seriously????? This is so in the style and spirit of old Disney which people LOVE - all about happy couples and happy endings and sunshine and flowers and HAPPINESS. And IMAGINATION - Yes, anthropomorphizing volcanoes is quite imaginative and amusing. Remember The Brave Little Toaster? What is there not to love? What has happened to audiences today that they can't appreciate a cute little animation like this. Seriously!

reply

I didn't say I took issue with the concept in theory, but rather the actual execution of it.

reply

Although I agree that the movie is flawed, I find you a little too harsh with it. I'm not saying it's like beating to death a baby seal with a bike chain, but finding "unintentionally funny" such a cute story with, sorry, a very nice song, feels a bit... evil. :D

- Booker, are you afraid of God ?
- No. But I'm afraid of you.

Perhaps I am just too dead inside to willing suck at the teet of Pixar and just devour whatever is given to me without gauging it through my own perspective and subjective reasons to like or not.

Or......everyone is entitled to their opinions as all art is inherently subjective and can not be stated as good or bad in a factual manner, therefore no one can be "right".

teet

I assume you mean teat.

To be honest the lyrics were dubious at best, and the rhyme scheme was pretty lazy.
