It Wasn't THAT Bad

I was totally prepared to be outraged after reading the comments on IMDb. But when I watched it, I was pleasantly surprised. Admittedly, I was not an Aaliyah fan, I am 66 years old, but I was deeply saddened by her senseless death. But, I would not give it a 3,

I just watched it, and I have to agree it wasn't TERRIBLE... yes, Lifetime isn't the best at casting but the movie itself was ok...

I think for people who didn't know her...they might believe it was ok. The problems were several. The casting is more disappointing to fans because they knew the characters around her and when they see people who don't look or act like them...it's frustrating

Next they skipped over HUGE parts of her life. She died young so the stories in her life are limited. How do you skip over the relationship she had with R Kelly when she was 15 and he was 27?

They ignored her movie career.

Most importantly, she was known for her pop hits...and they didn't have the right to play a single one. That's like doing a Michael Jackson movie and the only song you play is Rockwell' Somebody's watching me.

u sure u watched the same movie as us? they did get into her relationship with R.Kelly. i actually think they got TOO much into it to where it was a bit uncomfortable.

but even still...the movie was trash. the acting was atrocious (although i thought Shipp did ok with what she was given), the script was lame. the ending was pathetic. how do u not even show her doing a video shoot with her not on a boat? they didnt even have to play the Rock the Boat song...at least show her on a plane or somethin. give us something. instead we see her waving to Damon Dash (who was just....wtf) and end the movie there. it was trash all around. i only like the Aaliyah character. that was the only bright spot in this shameful piece of crap.

if u cant get the rights to a singers music...dont even f uc with it because its gonna be trash. Lifetime didnt care and did it anyway and didnt care how pathetic it was gonna be.

It was terrible. Terrible acting and casting. At least they told the truth about them having sex while making her first album. But the year they met isn't correct. They met and were having sex in 1992 while Aaliyah was 13. That confrontation with R Kelly and Aaliyah's parents never happened. R Kelly isn't crazy enough to do that because her father would have beat the **** outta him.

Sorry but it was that bad. Matter of fact it was horrible. If you knew little to nothing about her, did not grow up listening to her music, or did not grow to appreciate her until after her death, you would think its just a nice simple movie. It was soo bland and boring and skipped over so many great parts about her career. They couldn't use any of her original music so that was the first disappointment. They only briefly brought up her movies but didn't go any further into the making of those (I dont even remember her last movie Queen of the Damned being mentioned). As the other poster said, you would expect to be "taken back to the 90s" and be able to reminisce on her music, videos, dancing, award appearance, etc. but we get none of that. The most the movie could give us was some of her fashion sense and a few cover songs. When compared with other movies like the TLC movie and Notorious, it fails miserably. . Her Behind the Music special that came out after she died was way more entertaining.

I have to agree it wasn't spectacular, but way better than I expected. Yes the casting was WAY off. Yes it was injustice there was none of her music was in it (due to family objection). However I must say what's her name her played did a good job. AND she had a nice voice. Not Oscar worthy but relax people. IT'S LIFETIME what did you expect LOL . It wasn't that bad IMO. I have seen better biopic's. I give it a five Alexandra Shipp I think her name wasn't all that bad sheesh. Bottom line is if the family didn't approve then I feel it should of left it alone. PERIOD. But if people have hate and trash so be it smh

a good timeline of her if you didn't know much about her

I agree it wasn't that bad. Sure , it I was also disappointed they couldn't use the original songs plus some casting choices were questionable but besides that it was OK. It's a Lifetime movie for Pete's sake.

Nope, as a big fan of Aaliyah and someone who watched/grew as she grew at the time it was horrible. From the people they got to play the characters, to the script, to the way the movie was even acted was bad. Also like others said they skipped and mix in things that didn't even happen right in her life.

It was, it made "The Brittany Murphy Story" look like a masterpiece in comparison.

The characters were complete empty shells and Lifetime was scared to bring up any contriversial subjects, it made R Kelly seem like a nice guy who just happened to fall in love with the 15 year old niece of a friend (when in fact that was not the last or probably the first time that ever happened, the girl he peed on in that infamous video was another underaged niece of a friend and colleague of his)

And Damon Dash is (or used to be before Kanye got a voice to speak with) the biggest douche in Hollywood and his portrayal came out like nothing like that, I'm sure he wasn't douchy to Aaliyah but even when he was supposed to be angry towards those guys breaking his expensive vaise he was about as threatening as a bumble bee without wings.

And yeah there just wasn't any sort of story in this movie and it was flooded with song performances (of non Aaliyah songs sung by someone who didn't have half the talent Aaliyah had).

And they even dodged making it an exciting planecrash ending where the pilot knew they had overpacked the plane to the point where it wasn't safe to land, but not wanting to rub any elbows they decided to just end it right before she went to shoot the vid.

It was just the definition of bland and not taking any risks whatsoever.
