Princess of R&B??? Are you kidding me???

Before this chick died, almost nobody every heard of her.
And now she is the princess of R&B??? Give me an effing break.

The arrogance of Americans is unbelievable.

reply

that's what you get when Lifetime makes a bio-pic with no one who personally knew her involved

I loved Aaliyah and her music and was a fan before she passed

but I wouldn't consider her a princess of R&B. That's just giving her special treatment because she died and treating her like she meant nothing while she was alive, which to me, is kinda disrespectful

reply

I agree completely.
Don't get me wrong I aknowledge her short lived fame, but that was all it was.

It's not that she made any groundbreaking music or anything. Lol

reply

Short-lived career? She started when she was 13-14yrs old.

And even though I agree she wasn't as "popular" as they make her seem but she was hardly unknown. At the time of her death, not many black rnb artists were able to breakthrough into mainstream. Even back then Beyonce was a nobody who looked up to Aaliyah. Aaliyah was the first one, then broke into mainstream big screen, made it to the pop/top 40 charts etc so she was definitely on her way. She paved the way for all the other black rnb artists.

reply

I didn't say short lived career I said fame.
She wasn't that big of a star upto about 2 years before her death.
two movies that both sucked at the box office.
The one that did well was because of jet-li not because of her.

She is way overrated and did nothing for black artists. That's bull crap.

In the usa she had somewhat a career for a while.
Her dear overhyped her.

reply

Aaliyah was not the first one. Not even close.

Mary J Blige, Brandy, Toni Braxton, Mariah, Faith Evans, Lauryn Hill, Monica... that's just off the top of my head.

reply

Let's not be stupid, OP. Aaliyah was well known when she was alive. She sold millions of records, won awards, and was even in movies. She was very well known.

reply

What She did wasn't impressive, most of the people I asked who were alive during Her time actually only remember Her as the R&B singer who died in a plane crash. She was in TWO movies, the second "Queen of the damned" didn't even do well, and She only made three albums in Her life. I wouldn't say She was that big of a deal when She was living.

No she wasnt lol.

Aaliyah won ONE award before Her death and a couple AFTER Her death. As far as the beginning of Her career both Brandy and Monica were outselling Her and were kicking Her butt as far as winning awards as well.

reply

Ok... Brandy is a reasonable choice for the mantle of princess, but the op is acting like they called her the queen

reply

She was very famous before she died and yes she became even more famous because she died young but that shouldn't take away from her accomplishments. I'd say she is a princess of r&b based on her popularity and talent. She had a lot of great music and was a big influence of today's music

reply

You are kidding me right? Come on you are totally blowing this up. She wasn't famous upto 2 years of her death. She was mediocre at best. No she ain't no queen.

reply

I sadly agree, Aaliyah was a cool person and everything but She was a mediocre Talent who is overhyped in death.

reply

Agreed. I like the movie with jet li and that soundtrack but there is nothing more

reply

LOL I know. Before she died Beyonce was already wildly popular, while she was in the girl group ''Destiny's child'' she was still considered ''the star'' and back in June 2001 the single ''Survivor'' (with main vocals by Beyonce) was number 1. Aalyah's album was actually failing to chart...
