They Got Everything All Wrong

It's like the people who did this movie barely did their research. When they showed reenactments of the Saved by the Bell episodes, none of them were true. I've seen all of them. The first episode wasn't about Zack forgetting his mom's birthday. The character of Tori never had an ex-boyfriend. And they made it where for sure Slater cheated on Jessie with Chrissy when in the episode it was a misunderstanding. Plus, they made the Elizabeth Berkley and Tiffany Amber Thiessen characters so cliched and weak. That so-called epilogue at the end was weak too. "Oh yeah, this actor was in tv shows, movies, broadway, starred on so and so, etc." It's like whoever made this movie got their info on wikipedia.

^thats very true. In fact, I think when they filmed the graduation episode with tiffani and Elizabeth, that was intended to be the last episode. However, the studio ordered more episodes, so that's when Tori came in.

Dialogue was changed to most likely avoid copyright infringement from the series creators, writers and such.

reply

You are correct. They had to change up some things because of that. I read that's also why they never put Screech in his trademark suspenders.

reply

is that also why they had the school colors wrong and the caps and gowns were actually the color of their rival school, Valley?

reply

I agree with everything, OP! The sets were off as well. The Max looked pathetic and it never had double doors.

reply

The Max never had chairs at the tables either, they had booths. The jukebox was way off from the 1950s. ha so cheap

reply

yes they did. They had both.

reply

The Max did have both... but the group always sat in a booth. I believe that's what's being said here. In the movie, their booth was clearly replaced with chairs.

reply

The Max in SBTB: The New Class had double doors after the original one burned down.

reply

Actually Tori's character DID have an ex... Forgot his name but it was that rich nerd that won Screech's mom's dog in the poker game...

reply

He was Violet's ex (tori spelling.)
Eric is referring to the CHARACTER Tori (played by Leanna Creel.)

reply

You're right my bad. Got the 2 confused! Thanks

reply

That wasn't Tori's ex. That was Violets ex (who was played by Tori Spelling, hence the confusion).

They didn't even get the color of their graduation robes right. They were blue in the movie. For Pete's sake, how do you make a movie about this show and somehow miss that everything in the school was maroon and gray? It was a Lifetime movie, so I'm guessing it didn't have a big budget, but how can you be that sloppy with the continuity?

I didn't expect it to be exact, but I figured it would at least be close. It's like whoever designed the costumes and sets didn't even look at the original show to try to get it right.

I didn't expect much from this movie, and it still somehow fell below expectations.

Well It is "Unauthorized". Of course it's gonna be a piece of crap.

Ever see one of those "Unauthorized" documentary DVDs of a singer?

they're never good

reply

the Unauthorized Michael Jordan movie is another gem rife with horrific inaccuracies.

reply

lol, I couldn't believe that. How hard was it to find maroon robes? I absolutely CRINGED at "I'm so excited!" Does anyone know if EB was truly responsible for that storyline? I have never heard that before.

I had the lowest expectations for this (it was Dustin-inspired), but it had a chance to be a little fun in a campy sort of way. They could have done a montage that highlighted some of the classic scenes set to the awesome soundtrack this flick had.

How long was the movie actually? The commercial breaks drove me nuts.

reply

I laughed right along with Dustin at "I'm so excited." I've never met anyone who took that scene seriously. Obviously people can become addicted to uppers but it was so over the top that even as a kid I couldn't take it seriously.

reply

"How long was the movie actually? The commercial breaks drove me nuts. "

It ran 2 hours with commercials.

reply

It's almost as if this was unauthorized, if only they made that clear in the title of this unauthorized story...

And so, God came forth and proclaimed widescreen is the best.

reply

haha. it's true. it does seem like they wrote the script based on "saved by the bell's" wikipedia page.

effing lame.

reply

Unauthorized or not, when 5 minutes of research could fix some of the mistakes they made, it's inexcusable. I figure they would make up some of the conversations between executives the kids wouldn't have been privy to since this was based on Diamond's perspective, so I could accept that, but surely the stuff the average fan who ever watched the show would know are things that should be done correctly.

reply

As someone else said, it may have come down to the possibility of a lawsuit. Since it was unauthorized that means that they didn't have permission from any of anyone who actually owns any right to the show. Those rights would include set and costume designs. So, in order to avoid any possible lawsuits, they changed just enough so that it isn't a copyright infringement.

reply

I know right!

reply

It's like another poster said though, since this is UNAUTHORIZED (and legally challenged) they couldn't show exact duplicates of the sets, storylines, or anything that's 100% identical to Save By The Bell really. It actually made no sense to me why they even did this movie fully knowing they had to legally change so much. It's was just sort of weird, I was expecting to see how this behind the scenes drama but just got a typical life time movie. That network can't do anything right =/

reply

They did get a lot of eyes watching it though, so they obviously did something right.

reply

Ratings were bound to be high, everyone who grew up watching Saved By The Bell were excited as hell over a tell all movie. The movie will continue to get high ratings because no matter how much it gets bashed, all the fans of the show who didn't watch the move- will catch it next time it's on. If they actually centered on the controversies regarding it, then I don't think so many would've been so disappointed. I get that they were worried about lawsuits over the drug allegations, etc but lifetime wrote this like the opening to a new tv drama. They didn't really tell us anything we didn't know, in fact it confused more people in general since they legally had to make up half the script.

reply

It was reported that the ratings were low though...
Maybe low for the network and expectations.

reply

Yeah, it was very low in comparison to other movies they've released on the network this year. Only 1.6 million.
