Only thing I don't like about these games.....

....is the incredibly long hours you must spend farming/grinding the same levels again and again for echoes/souls, just to have a chance vs. the progressively tougher bosses/creatures as you progress through the game. I have no idea how other gamers do it without this repetition....maybe I'm missing something. But in "Bloodborne", I didn't really start having success until I went back and forth constantly between levels to re-spawn enemies, so I could keep leveling up.

After awhile, this process just gets tiresome. It also feels a bit cheap...like your progress is not truly earned.

It's a shame because the level design and creature design are incredible.

I get what you are saying, but that is kind of what you have to do with most RPG games.

I went back to play old school games like Eternal Blue, Chrono-trigger and Final Fantasy III, 7..
You have to do a bit of grinding in those games as well.

In Bloodborne once you find those good areas to grind enemies you don't have to do it for that long. I like that feeling though when you are under leveled for a boss and come back to kick it's ass.

I guess so, though I don't play many RPG games. I know leveling up is an important part of these games, but with the Souls/Bloodborne games, the enemies/bosses are so difficult that leveling up sort of becomes the main part of the game. I know I don't stand a chance without it....a LOT of it.

I agree with the last part, but I find grinding takes up at least 50% of the gameplay for me. I admit, once the grinding is over, the game gets more fun again when I'm exploring, but grinding takes such a long time. There are days I do nothing but grind and come back the next day to actually "play".

For such a great game, I wish there was another way.

Where are you at in the game?

If you are still in your first game there are three different areas I grinded a bit before moving on. I am assuming you passed Cleric Beast.
-The Lecture Hall with those water slug ghost things.
-Towards the end of the game Mergos Middle loft will be the last place you should grind at if you are going for the Chalice Dungeons/Old Hunters Add on. There are 3 deformed pigs and a bunch of the Shadows guys.

Are you going to play the Old Hunters ADD on? I just finished it last night with my NG+ character leveled 200 and it was damn tough. I highly recommend playing through the main game and then the Old Hunters on your first game.

I have to be honest....I haven't played in a couple of months. I did indeed defeat the Cleric Beast. Think I'm 2-3 areas past Hemwick Charnel Lane. I got discouraged when I got to the area with the rock-throwing giants. I hit a large area of water that was poisoned and I kept dying continually. The recent preview vids for Dark Souls 3 reminded me of my struggles with BB, which is why I came to post.

As far as "grinding areas", a lot was done early on in the game, after I got past the bonfire area with about 3000 enemies...lol. I grinded a lot there, with the 2 giants close by on the left and the house with 2 levels to the right.

Believe it or not, I AM interested in The Old Hunters add-on, but only if I start making progress in BB. I just can't help but think I am either not good enough (requiring too much grinding) or I'm going about the game the wrong way. I find it very difficult to avoid hits.

And, oh yeah, Hypogean Gaol is pretty much impossible. 😞

Those rock-throwing giants are a bitch. There are multiple short cuts in each area that can take you straight to the boss. If you are having difficulty with certain enemies you can run past most of them and open up those shortcuts. You could come back and explore the area for some key items later.

The lecture hall is right before the area your'e in is a good area to grind for some echoes.

Good luck dude! Bloodborne was my first from software game and I got ruined in the first part of the game learning the game mechanics. I just recently finished Dark Souls and got destroyed early on as well. Don't start that NG+ on The Old Hunters or back up a save file if you are going to try out the Chalice Dungeons. The Chalice Dungeon bosses are TOUGH and the Old Hunters Bosses are some of the most difficult in the game.

Thanks, man. Nice to hear from someone who doesn't just say, "get good at the game, stop complaining"....lol.

Since the Chalice Dungeons don't progress you through the actual game, I actually have been skipping them....I think I checked them out once.

I will try looking out for the shortcuts you mentioned...thanks. And yes, I have occasionally found that running past enemies can be the best option (the gate past Hemwick Charnel, for example).

Uncertain of whether I will get Dark Souls 3. Depends how sadomasochistic I feel 😂

You don't need to do the Chalice Dungeons till after you complete the main game. There are some awesome boss battles in them. The levels get a bit repetitive though.

When you get stuck on certain enemies try running past them to find those lamps. Dark Souls 3 looks epic. I might be starting up Dark Souls 2 soon to get prepared.

Thanks for the advice. One thing I do admit is that, though tough as nails, these games are very addictive. You keep thinking there HAS to be a way and you keep trying. Maybe it's our reluctance to admit that we've been beaten that keeps us going.

Anyway, I actually find Bloodborne a bit more manageable than the Souls games, for some reason. With those games, I find I can't even progress past the start of the game (especially Dark Souls I).

I played Dark Souls for the first time recently and I got destroyed early on as well. I got so used to Bloodbornes quick play style and then went back to Bloodborne expecting to use my shield.

I picked up The Order 1886 today at Target. I need a change of pace after Bloodborne.

reply

Yeah, that sounds about right. For me, the Souls games require even more grinding than Bloodborne, and it's not as interesting grinding. Bloodborne, at least you have some wicked early levels.

Enjoy The Order. It looks interesting...probably will get it at some point. I got Phantom Pain on sale during Black Friday but haven't started it yet.
