Are 9-10 year olds really THAT stupid?

For all of you who have seen the movie:

I did too and I can't believe that these kids would have acted so extremely stupid in real life. I know they are kids BUT THOSE two boys depicted in this movie were borderline retards.

Anyone know if this was intentionally done by the director/writer?
Still gave it a 7/10 cause of what Whigham and Bacon brought to the table.

I just finished watching it and I sort of get what you mean, they did do some stupid things but I think it was intentional to show how innocent they are, like how they untied the guy without really thinking about why he was there. I do think there were some instances where they just used kid logic which we probably all had once upon a time, like thinking body armour can completely protect you from bullets. I think that the acting from the kids more than made up for it, I was worried they would be like most child actors. And of course Bacon and Whigham nailed their parts so overall I really enjoyed the film and hope those kids have some long acting careers ahead of them

The stupidly was for comic effect and to build tension...

Everything they said seemed like an adult pretending he was a 10 year old. That is why the movie fails... bad writing that doesn't come across as natural through the acting.

it felt a bit like a simpsons episode... bart and milhouse would act the same way.

I thought the kids were very believable. There were touches, like the complete division between "good guys" and "bad guys," that rang perfectly true for 9 year old kids.

And the kids weren't so much stupid as naive.

Prepare your minds for a new scale of physical, scientific values, gentlemen.

They were basically dumb country bumpkins who probably had crumby parents and were bad in school. Having cousins who grew up country, this is not hard to believe.

reply

Some are, not all. I think they were made this stupid because the writer wanted to keep the story simple, or didn't want to put much thought into things besides basic suspense.

I have to agree. If this is an accurate representation of American youth, I can say my favorite phrase once more: 'witness the dumbing down of Americans'. One of the worst films I've seen of late...so bad it's almost funny. 
