What if I hve never played the game or seen any other series?

Will it matter if I decide to watch this as the trailer looks cool.

It doesn't look like previous information about the series will be required as it appears to be a separate event than anything we have seen in the games, not an adaptation of a game's story. I can't guarantee they may throw one or two in jokes but if you have any questions just come back here and I'm sure I or some other person will be able to explain it.

Considering this takes place directly after Halo 4, involves the treaty between the Humans and Covenant, what broke the treaty, and knowledge of what a Halo actually is, I would say it's best to get some backstory first.

Nightfall is simply a marketing tool for Halo 2 Anniversary and specifically Halo 5. The Spielberg produced Halo TV show will be aimed at the less informed viewer. But right now, Nightfall (right or wrongly) is being aimed at the fans.

Just watched the first episode. You don't need previous halo information to understand what is going on. Most of the concepts they explore are explained. You might see an alien or something you don't recognize at first but it is designed as such that someone will mention what is going on for non fans.

The story takes place in the Halo universe. It is a side story not tied directly into the plot of any of the games so you won't miss anything if you have not seen one or the other. But fans and non fans will be able to appreciate it.

Agreed. I've never played it nor watched any other of the shows/movies/etc. I have an idea of the story line mind you, but had no problem picking up any of what was happening. I think it'd probably help if you're a sci-fi fan to begin with tho'...
