How do you stop being a spartan?

The guy who used to be a spartan how? You are physically and genetically transformed into one you don't just reverse that like its nothing.

Believe in yourself and create your own destiny.

It looked like he had some of his cybernetic components ripped out when he gave it up, probably components that affected strength enhancement. You can see the scars that could just as easily be from removing the implants as they could be from installing them.

Some of the other enhancements, such as increased stamina, intelligence, endurance, etc was probably still in him. He was tougher then most of the ONI guys they sent.

the only way you can no longer be a Spartan is when Covenant is gifting them many many plasma holes in the suit.. maybe some needle holes also.. there is no other way

FIRST OF ALL .. Spartans are selected for their innate abilties, they are recruited as children, age 5-7, they are thoroughly tested both mentally and physically before even considering them as Spartans.
From the time they are getting into those training barracks they are considered no more than soldiers and treated as such. At age 13-16 they are augumented both mentally and physically. You can't drop out then... you can drop out before the augumentation in only one way.. get dead. The training is brutal and not forgiving for anyone.
Imagine the toughest military training there is today.. multiply by 10 and understand how the Spartan training was going. From mental torture to starvation those kids endured all.

To conclude.. THERE IS NO WAY YOU CAN BE AN EX SPARTAN and be alive in the same time.

There are several cases prior to this series which dealt with former and retired SPARTAN II members, several of which that were in decent health (physically and mentally). The first one that comes to mind was in the Halo Graphic Novel.

In Halo 2 the Chief is given the Mark VI armor. According to one of the short stories in that book that armor HAD to be combat tested before it was given to the Chief, and since only people who participated in the SPARTAN II programs can use that armor without risking serious injury to themselves, they used a retired SPARTAN II, named Maria, to combat test it in an exercise before shipping it to Cairo Station. Maria had left to start a family and while they did ask her to come back and fight, she said she was happy caring for her family, but mentioned she would be sleeping a lot better knowing that armor was going to 117.

I'm not a Halo expert, but I don't understand how you can stop being a Spartan-II. The augmentations nearly killed them going in, I can't imagine they can be removed returning them to pre-augmented form.

Its only now that 343 are starting throwing the word spartan at every damn character like its nothing.
If you followed the lore from the first game and books, there are only a few spartans and all but blue team die on Reach.
