Question ... (Spoilers)

This movie seems to focus a lot on domestic violence and alcohol abuse.
What bothers me is most people seem to find it absolutely outrageous that he "fought back" (hardly) when she was very obviously abusing him.
If you are against domestic violence, it should be as a whole, not just violence against women. Women should not be allowed to slap around/push/assault men. I've known men that would sit there and take it because they were worried that if they even held her back, they would somehow get in trouble.
I do not advocate violence against women OR men. It should be treated fairly and equally. That's true feminism.
(and yes I am a woman)

Totally agree. I've seen a few people on this board saying Dan was abusing Mel both mentally and physically, but Mel was the first of the two to show violent tendencies. Any time Dan was rough with her, it was when Mel was throwing a fit, slapping him, etc. Yes, Dan was wrong to be abusive toward Mel, but I believe Mel is also to blame for starting it. It was such an unhealthy relationship

omg. thank you both for mentioning this. Mel physically and verbally attacked Dan like 3 times during, what, a week or two (the span of the movie)? IMHO he was in most cases just protecting himself.

I definitely don't think he was abusing her. His action on the front lawn (before he got arrested) were questionable, he should not have gotten on top of her like that but she was abiding him (possibly regularly) and he was just trying to make her stop.

I agree with the OP, I'm a feminist myself and people assume we love to just hurt men all day, but no we recognize the patriarchy hurts men as well. He was simply just restraining her, Mel had anger issues and was abusive. I don't think Dan treated her all that well with the cheating he did, that was wrong, but I think they were both wrong with their treatment towards each other, they had a very unhealthy relationship. I don't think Dan should've hit her towards the end though, it didn't solve anything cuz Mel once again pushed him and just continued the fighting.

Ugh thank you. Unfortunately I see so many women who identify as being feminists but always play the victim and wrongly accuse men in a way to build themselves up as women (clearly they do not have the right idea).
I personally don't usually think of myself as a feminist but I totally agree with everything you said.

I saw it as being clumsy (her) and he trying to stop her from that
didn't think anyone was abusing the other
i agree it goes both ways but i think it is better if the man controlled himself more in those situation, a woman usually wouldn't hurt a man as much as he could hurt her
so i liked how he tried to control her instead of pushing her like she did
but what the police did was disgusting and annoying, they didn't care to ask and treated him like a criminal.

It is never about what happened, it is only how you look at it!

It's exactly that attitude that allows women like Mel to continue acting they way she does in this film. "I won't hurt him as much as he could hurt me so I'll keep hitting him." By the way, that simply isn't true, especially in this film. She put Dan in the hospital twice.
