Yet again, men portrayed badly(spoilers)

How about the scene where Mel's passed out and that dude takes advantage of her? Like seriously? The old cliche that men are sleazy rapists that can't control themselves. I'm tired of men being portrayed as sex crazed lunatics. Not all men are like that. There are many respectable guys who would take care of their drunk female friend. I'd just like for once that a man be portrayed in good light in a movie. It's just a huge pet peeve of mine.

Honestly it was so predictable. I knew it was going to happen as soon as they were left alone together. "Yep, he's gonna try and have sex with her." And sure enough it happened.

reply

Yeah and just like he had sex with Amanda. And sure enough it happened.

Almost 99% of offenders in single-victim incidents are male and 6 in 10 are white. (Source: Sexual Assault Prevention and Awareness Center, University of Michigan) One in six American women is the victim of an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime. (Source: Rape, Abuse, & Incest National Network)

But, sure, let's pity the men for being portrayed accurately in a movie.

Not to mention, this guy wasn't a "friend." During the party scene when they all raise their shot glasses, he says, "Who the *beep* is Dan?" If he didn't know her boyfriend of six years, he obviously didn't know her. There's also a scene where Mel's friend introduces the two guys to Mel. So, yeah, there are many respectable guys who would take care of their drunk female friend. This guy clearly wasn't a friend or a respectable guy.

You're obnoxious comment just proves my point even more. This man hating trend has got to stop.

reply

Dude there's no man hating trend. It's just that now men are being held more accountable for their crimes. How is that a bad thing?

reply

Truth is I hate this movie and everything about it. Not just this scene, although I chose to rant about it. There was a million other things I could have chose to rant about.

A lot of guys would try to have sex with a girl if she's there. They had both been drinking and had flirted earlier in the evening. She was somewhat "flirtatious" during her drunkenness and let him cuddle with her. I don't think it was a way to make men look bad, it's just reality that it might happen. And he may not be that way when sober, but you can get a little horndoggish after drinking.

I mean, Mel is portrayed as a violent abuser the whole movie who had emotional high's and low's, why aren't you complaining about the way women are portrayed as high strung emotional creatures who cannot control their actions in that state, as per usual?

reply

You're right. Mel was horrible. But so was everyone else in this movie. Seriously, not a single likable character.

reply

My thoughts exactly. I was waiting for a giant meteor or something. Or zombies.

I actually blame her friend more that she left him with her and took the decision to let him stay at her place and trying to get her to party when she was sad about Dan
who would do that?! her friend is extremely drunk and really sad, she leaves her with a complete stranger spending the night at her place?!
i think that guy was not a friend with any of them, they just him that night
but i don't agree with men portrayed badly, they were both drunk and those situations should be avoided from the beginning and some men would try to take advantage and some won't
portraying those or those doesn't mean all men are like that
and women too some of them would try to take advantage also.

It is never about what happened, it is only how you look at it!

I agree but it could have so easily been prevented. If her so called friend hadn't left her alone in that condition with this guy they barely knew, it wouldn't have happened. He wasn't their friend at all. She was in the wrong for doing that just because she wanted to get back to the party. Mel should never have let herself get that drunk, she made herself totally vulnerable, just not a smart thing to do, she didn't look after herself at all. That guy was just a creep, like you said, but not a friend of Mel's at all. It may be tiresome to see that situation played out yet again but I think it was realistic. A woman on her own just can't get that drunk with unreliable "friends" and be safe from rape or near rape. What I'm not sure about is whether the Mel character learned anything from that. I think she just saw herself as a victim and wanted sympathy and support from her straying boyfriend instead of thinking about how it could have been prevented and questioning getting that drunk. She might have excused getting that drunk on her relationship woes. I'd have to watch that scene where she phones her boyfriend after again to know for sure but I don't think she took anything away from that situation.

Having recently watched the movie, I didn't find it "anti-male" at all. In that particular scene, she invited the guy into the bed with him. He took that as a signal that she wanted to have sex. When she yelled at him to stop, he stopped, looked annoyed and confused, and left. That seems pretty like a pretty realistic assessment of a guy not who though he had consent and then realized he misread the situation.

I was surprised at how much the movie puts Mel in the negative situation. She is emotionally and even physically abusive to Dan. The whole movie is essentially about a guy breaking away from his self destructive girlfriend.

I still didn't like the movie because I found both characters to be kind of stupid, but I would not classify this as a bad portrayal of men (though you could argue it makes men look week since Dan was basically suffering domestic abuse from his girlfriend).

Revenge is the most important meal of the day.
