Am I the only one who appreciates Disney changing Kiara's character?

I did like her sweetness in SP, a rebel Disney princess like Ariel.

But she was more of a cardboard cut-out, TLG seems to be making her more of a real character with flaws and depth, I'm certainly glad that her relationship with Kion isn't like the storybook cliché one, very realistically portrayed, and she actually acts a little like Twilight Sparkle in MLP, even the voice, which is ironic considering how many bronies consider TLG to be a MLP rip off.

reply

She hasn't really been in it much past the pilot which is a shame. I thought they had made a huge retcon in the last episode where it seemed Kiara was already hunting as a cub until Nala said they were only training at the end. They have to be careful doing a midquel like this when they could easily fall into traps of inconsistencies with Simba's Pride although for what the demographic is it probably doesn't matter that much.

reply

Well, with the presence of Kiara's little brother and friends and the Lion Guard itself, it's possible that the storyline of SP will change quite a lot, maybe flesh out things that weren't really added in SP or explain these little details like Zira's banishment or the parentage of the Outlander children, stuff like that, what they didn't think of for SP or didn't get the chance to could be used for TLG, just a thought.

reply

That's true. I noticed watching Simba's Pride recently that they only focussed on their cub days for a really short time. I think without credits the runtime is only about an hour and ten minutes. I think they could have spent an extra ten to twenty minutes on more character development for the new characters. They certainly didn't skip out on the musical numbers but sometimes they were almost one after the other. I wonder if any scenes were cut because they certainly had time for more.

reply

Yes, and maybe with TLG being set in-between Kiara's cub to adolescence hood, they have more opportunities to show things that we never saw on screen in SP, untold History.

I'm with you guys about Kiara's change in character for this show. Actually, this is what I think in my mind what Simba's Pride should have been since there were many plot holes in that one. Hopefully the writers will find the right balance between audience appropriateness and maturity of writing.

Wow...seriously? The two shows never really cross my mind. They couldn't be any more different in nature.

At first I was reminded of MLP due to the Lion Guard marks and the "diverse group of friends" premise, but since that initial impression, I haven't really been reminded of it again. None of the Guard members feel like direct copies of ponies or anything like that, either.

reply

True, that's why people shouldn't be quick to make that assumption. There were plenty of other shows back in the day that showed a group of friends with their own special powers... Captain Planet, Sailor Moon, Powerpuff Girls, and Power Rangers. The Lion Guard and MLP are not really new in that aspect.

True. Funnily enough, atm I'm watching a Netflix cartoon called Glitter Force, which is extremely similar to Sailor Moon (and Winx Club, W.I.T.C.H., Lolirock, Milky Way & the Galaxy Girls, and all other more-or-less-alike versions of the concept. ;)
