Lions of the Outlands review

It took almost a year to wait for this episode, but it sure was worth it since there are a lot of great things in this episode. First we have the long overdue return of Jasiri a fan favorite, plus the inclusion of the Outlander lions led by Zira (even better the voice actors for Nuka, Vitani, and Kovu reprise their roles nearly 20 years ago). The song Lions Over All is IMO the best of the villains songs from this show. What's so great about it? It's menacing tone, reminiscent of "Be Prepared" and the singing of Zira that harkens back to any song Bette Midler sang. But what really sets this episode out is the fact that it covers a dark and mature area of the franchise, harkening back to Simba's Pride where Rafiki tells the backstory. Adding on to this is where Zira attempts to lure Kion to her pride using various methods, even attempting to kill Kion as well. The battle at the climax is up to or a little less in quality than the one where Kion and Jasiri battle Janja's clan, but it is still a good battle nonetheless. The ending of the episode shows that Kion really has cemented his alliance with not only Jasiri but her clan as well. Hopefully we'll see more of Jasiri in the future....

I wish Jasiri could join the Lion Guard.

I hope the Outlanders remain as reoccurring villains.

The only thing I didn't like about the episode is how it portrayed Kovu as totally good in his teens. Yes, as a young cub he was still innocent but as he grew, he started to turn more to Zira's way of thinking. It wasn't until he grew closer to Kiara that he changed his mind.

Actually, Kovu was always the "reluctant villain" from Simba's Pride and that has carried over to this episode. If you'll notice, he wasn't eager to engage in conflict with Kion like his brother Nuka.
