Deneuve storyline

Saw this film yesterday, loved it. Didn't quite understand the meaning of the Deneuve storyline though (if there even was one). Can someone enlighten me?

I'm not sure either, but it looked like she identified/complemented some with the caged animal, her being a circus music romantic living with a cold unloving biznessman...
Also took it as references to Dian Fossey, "King Kong" & "Paradise: Love", but that might be interpretative 😏

It also just could be writers having a go at evolutionists/creationnists ,&/or not, zoophiles 👺, it's a comedy after all.

Thanks for the insight. I found the gigolo scene completely necesarry, even more than the gorilla. About which I initially thought that maybe she used to work at a circus and they knew each other.. kinda like a King Kong storyline.

The 'monkey' storyline is a reference to Nagisa Oshima's 'Max mon Amour'in which Charlotte Rampling has a similar relationship, whereas the the gigolo scene can be seen as mirroring her role in Buñuel’s most succesful film Belle de Jour (1967) in which Deneuve plays a prostitute: https://bttcinema.com/2016/04/28/jaco-van-dormaels-the-brand-new-testament-post-1-a-slice-of-bunuel/
