Why did they make Squirrel Jewish? *SPOILER*

Why did the filmmakers make a point of having a Jewish funeral for Squirrel instead of just having a generic movie funeral? There was never any reference to the fact that he was Jewish, nor was Jewish culture ever a part of this movie.
